  • Larger replacement motor? 1.1L to 1.6 (B6)?

    Hei,
My girlfriend has a lovely rust-free Mazda 121 (1989) with a 1.1L (is this a B1?) motor. The headgasket is going and instead of reconditioning the stock head, I considered using the chance to install more displacement. In Norway, there are essentially no 1.1L engines in the national junkyard registry, although there are tons of 1.6L B-series cars (323 etc). Assuming I am not in a position to weld or make any significant structural modifications, what are my "plug-and-play" options to replace her engine?

    1. Will a B6E longblock fit (a) the stock motormounts and (b) the stock transmission?

    2. Is it possible to get a decent tune from the stock carburator, or is an aftermarket unit necessary to deal with the extra displacement? (I do not want to switch to EFI)?

Essentially, is it possible to grab a B6E from a 1991 323, rebuild it and plug it in with the same motormounts, transmission and transmission mounts, and anxillar items? I assume I am missing something (?), but is this realistic?

    3. Finally, If I attempted to install a 5-speed transmission from the donor, would this require structural modifications?

I would perform the actual swap in an open area, hundreds of miles north of the Arctic circle, so I would prefer not to attempt protracted frame modifcation efforts.

    Best wishes

i hate to make assumptions regarding a region i know little about and would never want to visit but i'd guess the B6 motors you have available from the 323 are the SOHC version. physically, the B1 and B6 are identical externally and all the mounting points and tapped holes for motor mounts and accessories and transmission should be the same. after doing the swap you wouldn't even know it wasn't the original 1.1 in there. the SOHC B6 is under 100HP stock so no need to go with the donor tranny but you might consider replacing the stock clutch with a mild aftermarket performance kit. the gear ratios might be a little better matched to the engine with the donor trans but you'll probably have to fab some mounts. the B1 trans has a lighter flywheel and lower final drive ratio than our Festiva B3 (1.3L) so you should have some nice off the line snap mated to the B6.
others will chime in with more useful tips and info.

The B6 swap is the easy. But without pictures we cannnot tell you what will need to be done.

Reconditioning the head is much easier than a swap.

You will definitely want to use a different carb, the 1.1 unit will be tuned way too lean for the 1.6L. And given that you need a new carb, the Escort unit is recommended. This will require an adapter that can be procured through Rocketman.

Matt is on the AT til sometime in the fall (he's about 500 miles in heading nobo)

Before he went he sent me a batch of adapters that I passed on to Ben to sell thru the festiva store. Both escort and weber.

Thank you all for the rapid and useful response, this is very helpful!

Yes, the donor is, according to the salvage yard, a B6E 1,6 8V, so that is encouraging.

In terms of the carb swap - is there a specific series of carbs or the escorts that carried them that works with the named adaptor? Yes, I could more easily send the head to a machinist for flattening (assuming there are no cracks) but my girlfriend, who loves the car (as do I), admits that "accelerating to speed takes some foresight and planning". If I could add 25hp and 25 nm for not too much trouble, that would be nice.

                Thanks again.

Im not sure of the carb options you may have available there, someone else here can advise.
but you may want to source the intake and exhaust manifold gaskets first and compare, to ensure the 1.1 manifolds will fit the B6E head. Or use the B6 manifolds, the exhaust should be little problem to adapt, were there no B6's up there with carbs?
                  No car too fast !

Worst case, we could send you b3 intake and exhaust manifolds for the cost of shipping... They will interchange with the B6 and then be guaranteed to fit the carb adapter.

If the B6 came with a carb setup here, I have yet to come across one in the registry. I do, however, believe that a B3 manifold should be easy to get a hold of, however. I will let you know if I can put in an order to the US for the manifold or adaptor as per suggestion!

Arty, does the B3 intake manifold fit both gen1 and gen2 SOHC B6? I know the B3 exhaust manifold only fits the gen1 B6. In either case, he should use the B6 exhaust manifold, if available.

                        Norge, gen = generation.
                        Gen1 B6 = 1986 - 89.
                        Gen 2 B6 = 1990 - 94.

The b3 intake will not fit gen2 B6. Gen 2 B6 is the sohc, 16 valve correct?
