  • Miata 1.6 cas

I did a little googleing and found nothing.

My question is, can you use the cas from the early miata to eliminate the distributor?
Also will the crank pullys swap over? I ask that because of the outer ring slippage problems

I had read on here that the Mazda cas will fit the 1.6. The crank pulleys are another story. The earliest 1.6 Miatas had what they called a small face crank and if you re-used the crank bolt and woodruff key the bolt was prone to loosen eventually causing the lower pulley to wobble which eventually caused stress cracks which eventually led to the snout of the crankshaft to break off. I believe '93 and later used a different crankshaft with a snout that had greater engagement of the woodruff key. They call this the large face crankshaft. This has been well documented and as a matter of fact I did post a link on here that goes into greater detail and also tells you how to identify the two different style cranks. They say if the 4 bolts that hold the lower pulley to the hub are in a square pattern you are looking at a large face crank. I found this to not necessarily be true as my B6T out of a '91 Capri has the bolts in a square pattern yet it is a small face crank. If you can't find the information on here you can do a Google search and you will find it on a Mazda forum. Try "identifying Mazda Miata small and large face crankshafts" as your search. good luck!
'88 Festiva LX 5 speed, A/C, Carb, restored $$$ body paint, badly wrecked @ 200k.
'93 Festiva L, 5 speed, Aqua, bought from the original owner,.Zero rust but very nasty otherwise. Awaits the B6T.
'91 Festiva L, 5 speed, bought to drive while putting the B6T in the '93. now B6ME powered.

Yes the miata cas will fit but it won't be compatible with stock engine management.

I wanted to bump this as this has my wheels turning. I have had a build in my mind for a long time. I finally gave thr opportunity to buy a festiva.

I was set on either doing a b6ze swap or putting a b6ze head on a b3 once I found they will bolt on. My newest question which I am conflicted on is this.

It seems people are saying you can run the early miata cam angle sensor in the side of the b3 head. Is this true? I see it sort of answered above but, then references to 1.6l motors are given. Using all of the b3 stuff has me intrigued and using even smaller displacement sounds .

With that said, can you replace the b3 distributor with a b6ze can angle sensor? I understand the wiring is a hurdle but, I do not anticipate any issues as I have something special in mind for the ecu. And plenty of miata folks have gone the route I am thinking with proven success.

Thanks in advance. Would be sweet to play with the b3. Just makes it more weird and more my style.

I'm pretty sure the miata cas will fit the b3 head. Not sure if any of the bolts to hold it will line up though. The b3 distributor is almost identical to the cas internally unless you're trying to run full sequential fuel and spark on a megasquirt the b3 disty should work fine.

I intend on running a wasted spark Mitsubishi ecu. Dsmlink or nothing.

B6ze head physically bolts up to b3, but you may have issues with the valves hitting the cylinder walls and the combustion chambers would be funky with a ledge from the cylinder to the head. The pistons in a b3 are not shaped well for the dohc head either. Why not just put an entire b6ze or b6d in the Festiva? It's less work and the dohc b6 bottom end is much more robust.
Also, wasted spark is a downgrade from the stock ignition system which is sequential. Mazda used wasted spark to reduce hydrocarbon emissions, and the CAS sensor fit in the miata better than a distributor would have.
