  • 323 trans

    Couple questions
    1. Is the 4 speed manual better for track than the 5
    2. Will the trans from a 323 bolt up to my 1.3

#1 would depend on what kind of a track. #2 All transmissions used on B series engines will bolt up to a 1.3. Will the 323 transmission work in a Festiva without modifications, that I don't know.
'88 Festiva LX 5 speed, A/C, Carb, restored $$$ body paint, badly wrecked @ 200k.
'93 Festiva L, 5 speed, Aqua, bought from the original owner,.Zero rust but very nasty otherwise. Awaits the B6T.
'91 Festiva L, 5 speed, bought to drive while putting the B6T in the '93. now B6ME powered.

1st through 4th gears are identical on the 4 and 5 spd transmissions. So other than slightly lighter there's not much of a benefit. The 323 transmission will bolt up to the engine but will need to have new mounts made since it's a bigger transmission.

            1. For your application yes. You won't be driving on the highway. There's slightly less moving parts, and therefore less things to go wrong. And if you blow it up its less of a loss to the rest of us.

            2. Yes it will bolt to the engine. Use the clutch setup that goes with the trans, ie 323 clutch. However you will have to figure out mounting/axles/etc.

The starter motor mounts from the engine side with the g series 323 tranny, but for the Festi tranny it mounts from the tranny size. You will need different brackets to support it, or just forgo added bracing, and have to check clearance of the intake with the starter. It should fit, as it is the intake brace support on the 323 that is tight to the starter, not the intake itself.
