  • Carb'd Engine Swap

For future reference, what all carb'd motors can easily be swapped as a replacement for my 89 carby? I'm not all that interested in swapping to EFI, just maybe a little more power. I tried to use the search engine, but I could never really find my answer. Is the B6 the only option??

Does anyone have a picture of the intake manifold gasket to block for a B6T engine?

I'm swapping in a B6d with a manifold for dual Weber/Dellorto carbs into my '88 and reusing the b3 distributor. The manifolds are very hard to find and the carbs are $5-600 for a pair. You'll need a Carter P60504 electric fuel pump, it's already regulated to the correct pressure for the carbs. Also will need to move the engine forward 2" for firewall clearance.

If a mod deoesnt mind, someone could move this three to the correct engine swap category. For some reason I hadn't seen it when I made the initial post.

That dual carb setup looks awesome, but I don't have that kind of budget. I wish I did. I'd love to have something like that.

Beautiful!.....We don't need no stinkin' air cleaners.
Moving the engine forward will work wonders for traction and I believe you will need it. Dyno numbers would be interesting.

I have done the b6-2e sawp from a 1991 mazda 323 protoge. Here it is Carby, 16v , sohc.

I took a minor bit of wrangeling.

The alternator tensioning bracket will need a shave in the bottom side.

The exhaust won't bolt straight up and will need a 2 bolt flange added near the firewall . Get the j pipe off the engine while you are there because the exhaust manifold is different or take the front half of it all and weld that in.

The 323 coolant sensor on the inlet manifold needs to stay because the threads are different , it looks the same, it is not. The electrical connection is also different. Take 6 inches of the loom from the 323 with the plug and use 2 bullet connectors to connect to the stock wiring harness.

You need your old coolant piping that runs from the water pump around the front to the heater box. Also need the output on the thermostat housing to clear the distributor.

I have swapped the original carby for a slightly bigger weber. The onlet manifoild is about 40mm longer. A electric choke 32/36 escort style weber will not fit because the choke will hit the fire wall. A cable version may fit depending on the offset of the adaptor plate.

All that being said, I love the swap. Power is good and still looks right.

              Any questions , just ask.

I'm about to go into my shed and attempt this conversion. I just had a B6-2E engine delivered to replace my blown B3. Does the original gearbox mate-up without any issues? After a quick eyeball I noticed the starter motor was bolted in a different position on the Laser(fwd escort)

The original b3 gearbox bolts straight up. Just put your starter motor where it usually goes. Use the sheet metal plate from the b3 , between the engine and the gearbox. It will mate sweet.

When you pull your axels out, rember to put 2 screwdriver handles or some pvc pipe in the holes where the axels went. I dropped gears into my gearbox and started it before the axels went back in - the loose cogs punched a 2 inch hole on the case.

Any more questions , just ask mate.

Also, all the gaskets between the intake and the head are the same acording to autobarn on all single cam b series engines apart from the 1.8L engines.

So if the length of the intake causes your carb to hit the fire wall, the b3 intake may fit.

I dont know because I put an adaptor plate on my b6 to fit a 32/32 dir weber.

The intake runner cross setion Is about 3mm smaller on the b3 though.

Grizzly, you need the Mazda 323 carb manifold in the foreground.

It's gonna be a while before I even consider doing a swap, seeing that I've never even seen a 323 in North alabama. I appreciate all of the responses.

When I do eventually swap, I'd rather keep the carb. May just be me, but I try to consider the simplicity of the carb over efi, different sized injectors, computer, wiring, etc. I'm not looking for pure performance so much as whats simple and easy to work on.

Kozak, are those manifolds hard to find?

As you see in the picture, the 323 intake is from the sides, while the B3 is from the back.

I'll phone some yards around here. There were a lot of 323 Mazdas around Toronto at one time.

Another alternative would be a single carb 85 KB Laser setup from Australia. You would have to ship it via seamail and make an E5 to B3 adapter spacer.

Yeah my carb touches in 1 or 2 spots. I sourced my motor from a Ford Laser if that makes any difference. I'm currently giving myself a migraine trying to come up with an easy and readily available solution.
