I’m looking to add power to my b3 but I was wondering how much power the 5 speed transmission can handle before blowing out. I’m looking to put a b6 soho head on it and port the head, add some long tube headers and upgrade intake and injectors. Looking to pull 120hp but will the tranny hold up. I know I need a better clutch for it. I really don’t want to do a transmission swap I like the stock gearing

Depends on how you drive it. Beat on it, it’s probably gonna break. I think they are good for around 100 or so horsepower. I don’t recall the torque rating. A couple of folks on here have raced them and not had them break until they were doing high rpm launches at around 150 hp.Jerry

I have a b6t mated to the stock transmission and have had an extremely difficult time finding a clutch that will hold enough to cause damage.
Right now I have a custom clutch by kentucky clutch with ceramic faces and increased clamping force and that still slips.
Now, you may be able to break it if you try doing a burnout or something...Dark blue '91 B6t + E series

Charlie is running his current b6t powered car thru a 4 speed E series. Last I knew he was pushing 160hp and planning on bumping that up. His current engine/turbo setup is capable of 250hp or more. Not sure what he is running for a clutch.91GL BP/F3A with boost

And yeah, it sounds like you are gonna make yourself have a bad day trying that head swap. Open up your b3, or do the full b6 swap. Either way your hp prediction is a little off.91GL BP/F3A with boost

I think Charlie is testing a b6t+E on track currently.. iirc: it's wild but still holding.
No burnouts, don't dump the clutch, and try to avoid acceleration over bumps/gaps that allow the wheel to spin-grab.

Besides porting and flow-matching the stock injectors, he also added larger valves and more camshaft lift and duration. I don't think that porting and a header alone will do much; also, IMO larger injectors would be pointless without larger valves and more cam.
Previously this motor (with unmodded head) had a rear turbo, and made somewhat more power than what I have now, probably about 120 at the crank. It would slip the stock clutch (which was not a new one). But as long as I just accelerated while already underway, and didn't launch it from a stoplight, no tranny problems.Last edited by TominMO; 06-17-2018, 02:22 PM.90 Festy (Larry)--B6M (Matt D. modified B6 head), header, 5-speed, Capri XR2 front brakes, many other little mods

Clutch/flywheel should be the one used with the trans you are using. I.E, e-series trans, e-series clutch/flywheel.
You can use the B3 ECU/wiring, if I remember correctly on either the B6 or B3,Last edited by Team Lightning; 06-19-2018, 12:46 PM.Jerry

I think Matt got like 90chp out of a b3. Is that right?A mechanic knows how; A technician knows why.
