  • You bet it will have something to do with your idle

That is your idle speed bypass ...ISC/BPS Valve
I am curious how it will idle with it hooked up now.

Sheese. Well, too late now - I'm putting the original engine back in tonight. Hey, I wonder if it was disconnected on the original too? That would be good news

      • Dave, sorry I came into this late.

There should be one vacuum hose from the ATX to your air plenum. Not sure if lacking that would cause any problems. If so, maybe shifting problems? I had to connect one vac hose from my ATX to my new air plenum when I did my swap.

I'll try to stop by some time soon.

If today, you'd get to help put the old engine back in!

It did, thanks! Finished this morning, sounds & runs great. Now I need to get a spare VAF unit to fiddle around with.

              • Dave, Now that you have the engine out, how hard would it be to drill the intake manifold and add another injector on those 2 cylinders?

That would be a pretty big job - don't forget the fuel rail on the other end of these new injectors! I don't think it would accomplish what needs to be done, either, but I could be wrong...

                  • OK, I'm at it again Question - in the haynes manual picture below, is the pin diagram looking at the wiring harness connector or the plug on the VAF?

My guess is the harness, but I'm not 100% sure. Also, I'm guessing that the SIG pin is the one which sends the variable voltage signal to the computer based on the vane opening. Does that sound right to you all?

The reason I ask is because I plan to connect the thing up to power and graph the output through the full range of vane travel. Then with that info as a benchmark I can fiddle around with modifying it for the 50% airflow of the 2 cylinder engine.

                    • I'd say it's looking at the wiring connector, since to check voltage you'd need the pins to be connected to the car. Once unplugged, the VAF isn't connected to anything and wouldn't have any power to it.

(Keep in mind I know less about electronics than you do.) :?
