i put a cone filter on my otherwise stock 93 efi 5spd. after that, it seemed to run kinda weird. rpm's up and down at idle. it seems to have gotten a little better with premium fuel. is it the fuel, or is there something i should adjust or fix?

I really doubt it is the fuel .
The only thing you changed is the filter ??
Check your connection on the VAF , and how is you VAF mounted now ,
You may need to move it around a little , the door may not be sitting right and it is searching for idle .------------------------------------------------

do you think if i had new piping from the intake manifold to the filter it would help? of course i would get new hoses for everything attached to it. is there an easy way to test that monstrosity of a maf?I have owned 15 nissan/datsun's and 1 ford. What the hell is the matter with me?

Sounds like an air leak for sure. If you used existing hoses, check for a crack. That plastic becomes brittle.
The maf itself is probably fine - check to be sure it is plugged in all the way and tighten everything. You just have an air leak and are sending unmetered air to the engine causeing your problem.
