  • what tranny to use??

hey guys, i have a 93 escort 1.8l engine in my festiva and its bolted up to the original festiva tranny. i was wondering what tranny can i use that will hold up to this engine and to future turbocharging mods. please let me know what car i can get it from and what kinds of mods i would need to do to make it work.
    thanks

the most common swap is the G25MR. Its from the escort GT one from a 90-94 protege that had a BP, but both of these have a hydrauilic clutch... both Ideal_Society and Fastiva55 have this setup IIRC... the other car they came in is a B6T capri... it has a cable clutch so it just hooks up to the clutch cable thats already in the festy. With either tranny you will need the axels and intermediate shaft from the Capri, so looking for a capri would probably be your best bet. You will need to fab up some custom mounts for both the front and rear tranny mounts, and you will probably also have to make a new engine mount for the passenger side too, but I'll let the guys with G25MRs tackle that question in more detail
    No festiva for me ATM...

so if i find a tranny from a b6t it will bolt up to my 1.8l and will e strong enough for when i put a turbo on the engine, or should i just use the 1.8l tranny cause it is alot easier to find an escort gt in canada than a b6t tranny. also why woul i have to fab up the engine mount on the paasenger side if i already modified it to hold the 1.8l engine.
      thanks

p.s. how hard is it to convert the cable clutch to hydralic?? and also can i use the axels and intermediate shafts from the escort gt or it has to be the ones off of the capri..

The engine is moved forward when using the G25MR trans. That is why you need new mounts. And the axles HAVE to come from the Capri XR2. I don't know whatt all is involed in useing a hyd trans.

what about using the tranny out of a 323? mine went in pretty good. and you don't need to hunt up that stinkin intermediate shaft.

... because it isn't much of an improvement over the Festiva transmission. The only difference between the G25MR and the F5MR is the intermediate shaft... which is worth finding considering the advantage the G has in strength over the F.

Has anyone out there broken a B3 tranny mated to a BP from a rolling start? I'm wondering about the benefits of using the G25MR tranny. The B3 tranny is alot LIGHTER and it seems strong enough to hold up if not abused.

How much does going the G25MR route reduce torque steer (bigger axles)?

                    Thanks.

Only the 91-92 EGT have the g5m-r. The 93-96 have the g25m-r.
