  • Fuel economy for different options: B6, B6T, BP, BPT

I've been considering changing out my '95 Aspire's stock B3 in favor of something more powerful. No surprise there. Anyway, I love the mileage of my B3, and would like to keep similar economy.

I have a Pick 'N' Pull near my house, which almost always has a few BP cars in it, and occasionally some B6D cars. I'm not new to engine swaps, nor turbocharging (see sig), so I'm not afraid!

Anyway, I was wondering what those who have done these swaps have gotten for gas mileage. I was pretty dead set on getting a BPD and turbo-ing it, but may end up not doing that if the gas mileage would be under 30 on the highway. I know that sounds silly, but having the GVR4's, I need something that's cheap enough on gas that I can still afford to drive them around on weekends. I'm really just looking for more pep from my DD. It's a 5-speed, btw, because I don't do auto's... hehe.

If this has been covered before, please point me in the right direction.

    Thanks for the info.

BTW, I should mention, for those who don't know me, I've been on here mainly to search for info since I've been a member, thus the "1" in the post count (now 2). I've been on FA.com for the same time, but am much more active there.

      Welcome outta the woodwork lurker

The MPG difference between these engines would have more to do with how you drive than anything else. The BPD motor as you stated is the GTR motor, which is a better BPT. Maybe you meant the BP05 from the escort gt

So do you have OBDII? If so & you want a BP from the 1996 EGT, its allready OBDII so thusly the easiest. By the looks of it the Z5 from the
2nd gen protege is sizing up to be a nice looking swap also.
      Stock I think they have 63hp @ 5000rpm & 73ft-lb @ 3000rpm
      The Z5 has 92 HP at 5500 rpm & 96 ft-lbs torque at 4000 rpm
      The BP has 127 hp @ 6500rpm & 114ft-lb @ 4500rpm
Although I dont know how easy it would be to convert to your cars electrical system here are the other engines.
The BPD has 226 hp and 184 ft·lb torque.
The BPT has 179 hp and 174 ft·lb of torque.
      The B6-DE 16v dohc 105hp @ 6200rpm & 100ft-lb @ 3600rpm
      The B6-ME 16v sohc has 88hp @ 5000rpm & 98ft-lb @ 4000rpm
      The B6-E 8v sohc is about 82hp @ 5000rpm & 92ft-lb @ 2500rpm

So the Z5 will get you about 50% more power, while the BP will double the stock output. You probally can squeak out the MPG you want with either of those motors, but as I said earlier it depends on driving style.

Yeah, I meant BP-ZE, as seen here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_B_engine Sorry about that. You know the funny thing, I remember correcting someone else about that a while ago... hehe.

I already knew about the hp/torque levels. I was more trying to find out about real-world observed mpg for those that have done the swap.

My Aspire is a 1995 model, so therefore not subject to OBDII limitations (at least, not in my state).

my '93 festiva was getting 45MPG with a B6-E (from an '89 323), and its now getting between 30 and 35 with a BP-ZE (from a '91 EGT) depending on how hard I drive it... I'd imagine those numbers would be a little lower with an aspire though because their a little heavier... BTW, my car is a 5-speed
          No festiva for me ATM...

Yeah, I'm pretty happy about my Aspire getting about 36mpg overall (I've seen it hit 40 once or twice on the highway). In your BP, are you using a G25MR, or stock Festy tranny? You know what your tranny's ratios are?

My actual mileage as probably a little bit better than 36 overall, actually, since I'm running 205/50-15's, which are about 5% taller than the stock 165/70-13's.

I'm running the stock festiva trans... I don't remember the ratios but if you do a search they are posted in a couple places on this site. As for tires, yeah, I guess I should have mentioned that I'm running 205/60/R14s, so yeah, I probably have about the same tire height as your 50/15s
              No festiva for me ATM...

I was running a BP out of a Protege last year, and I was averaging around 35 all around with it. I drove it pretty hard, but that is in a Festiva which is alittle lighter, so I don't know.

I have heard that Matt Swab's Turbo BPT gets close to 35 as well.

BPT highway just over 30 mpg, city screwing around 15-20 mpg.

Eh, okay, perhaps I won't be BPT'ing it anytime soon, as I do have some city driving involved with my daily commute. What tranny are you using? And are you abusing it a lot, or is that with normal driving?

I have a '94 323 B6 with a stock Festiva ATX, and I am getting a lousy 25 mpg avg with (cough cough) moderate to heavy lead footed driving. I have a slightly larger '91 Protege TB and 2" exhaust with Magnaflow low restriction cat and straight through muffler. No CAI or header yet, so my "mods" are not fully realized.

That doesn't help you too much. My three speed ATX really does seem to soak up a lot of my available power, though compared with a stock 1.3 ATX Festiva it is "fast." I'll eventually go to the Aspire ATX with lockup torque converter. Probably this spring.

If I had an Aspire, I'd go for a simple B6 with those basic breathing mods to enhance your power and possibly a little better fuel economy. Easy to do and it should make a big difference with your 5 speed without affecting your current gas mileage much.

If you had OBD-II I'd say Z5!! I want to see a Z5 swap here in the U.S.

wow, thats not very good mileage , is the engine running OK, does it use oil or anything? My car is a 3 spd auto too, I kinda hoped for some bragable mileage with my new b6 motor, but by the sound of yours, mine might end up being be a pig too, are you running the stock b3 ECU?
