  • practical B3 FI performance mods?

Aside from a full exhaust (header back) what else is there available to improve on the stock B3? (SWAPS ARE NOT AN OPTION) we're talking strictly bolt on mods...

    Why waste the money?

You could drop $1000 on stuff and be under 80 hp.

seems like no one can read...he said a swap was not an option. to get some decent gains...a fully ported and polished head, an aspire intake manifold with a larger throttle body, header, msd ignition...that should give you some decent gains. you can get the head for around 100 on ebay, there is a shop that has them listed constantly, and they say they can do a p&p job on the one you buy for some extra $$. not sure how much, then maybe a more aggressive cam grind to make the most of the extra air your getting. check fms for a cam i think he can get em. short of that maybe a turbo?

          hmmm...

well let's start w/ the basics, it's already IN an aspire but i didn't tell you that in the beginning. the reason i'm asking about B3 performance is 1) it's not my car and 2) my G/F would kill me if i attempted a swap. (it's her car) i'm just looking to improve on it's anemic response w/o going overboard. if i had my way she'd be getting a full on BP-T but i refer back to reason #2.

so if you guys would be so kind as to get into specifics about the bolt ons, it'd be greatly appreciated. funny thing, i have a performance cam for the Festy but it never crossed my mind for the aspire. i thought about a turbo but that's a bit much at this point in time in that the car has to be completely reliable for her and school.

          your ideas are appreciated, thanks

Do you consider a cam or even a head swap a bolton?

I'd say a FMS header, low restriction cat and 2" exhaust along with a CAI and that cam you mentioned. May as well put in a modded head while you're at it, right?

Also, consider taking out the back seat and some other stuff if she doesn't need it to lighten weight.

In other words, just the standard "stage one" stuff to begin with, and do the head/cam if you want to go that far.

The cheapest, least intrusive gain would be some NO. But if she got addicted to that it could get expensive!

No way you could convince her to do a B6 swap? Seems to me a lot less work and cheaper to boot, especially compared to messing with head work.

IMO, the Aspire should have had the B6 w/80 hp at a minimum!

There're less bolts to turn on a motor swap than on a head swap. Just do it one day when she isn't looking.

yeah for real...your best bet? leave the damn thing alone. if she want's more performance then she can do something about it. something i learned about 90% of girls...they only care if it runs...and trust me if something goes wrong do you really wanna take the heat for it? i'd leave it be and work on your own car...relationships are usually not permanent anyway...you really wanna spend your hard earned money on a girls car that may break up with you or vice versa at any time? not saying she will mind you just that it's possible. thats why i never spend my moola on other peoples cars. i made that mistake once and god i can tell you it was harder to see the car go than the girl!

well a couple days ago she had her brother and a friend in the car w/ her and the damn thing topped out at 25 up a slight incline.

I NOW HAVE PERMISSION TO PLAY

so the exhaust is going in, no questions asked. and so is a cam, but what else is there to do on the intake side of things to up the ante?

what about MAF alternatives?, i plan on porting a spare intake that i have and having extrude honed, but there's got to be more that can be done w/o removing the engine

hmm, not sure. What year is it? OBDI or II? You don't want to go too big on a MAF, cuz that will throw your fuel trim wacky. Make sure you increase injector size also.
