  • Soundproofing

So I'm going to be giving the festiva a fresh coat of paint in the next couple of months and was trying to think of anything else that could use doing while the car is in pieces, and my mind jumped to soundproofing.

We all know festivas aren't exactly the quietest cars, particularly at freeway speeds so I'm going to see if I can improve on that at all.

So far I plan on putting dyna-mat or equvalent under the carpeting, in the doors if there is enough room and possibly under the headliner.

I figure thats a good start but theres probably some other ways to cut down noise.

Anybody have more tips/hints that may come in handy?

(btw, the paint is going to be indigo blue mica from the mazda 5)

I am going to COMPLETELY deaden my festy when I get to that point.

I had a New Ranger once that I spent almost $1000 on killing noise. It was awesome. Driving down the road at 75 and nothing. you could easily hear the passenger at a low wisper. I would compare it to a modern high end Mercedes. I will try to do the same to "Blue". I never used "Dynamat" mat stuff. I used a spray in plus LOTS of insulation. Yes, the Owens stuff. I pretty much anything I could find that would fit in any crevise. I am pretty sur ethe Brand was Mostly Stinger and Maybe some Dynamat. Back then they had hood liner, floor liner, firewall liner, headliner liner, door liner. They don't make most of it anymore. Heck even window tint helps.

I do not reccommend using Spray stuff though. Most of 'em are water based and even the best of cars get water inside and it really makes a nasty mess.

Sounds awesome , make sure you take lots of pics in your upgrades.

Dyna-mat has made it's way into quite a few Festivas .

I have never seen anyone use expandable foam in the body panels and fenders to fill in the airspace .

That may not be a real good idea , it would probably buckle the car :toothy10: :laughing5: :laughing6: :toothy8: :toothy7:

if you have the dash off, try doing the fire wall, that should cut down on the motor and road noise abit

There is a roll-on product available that is supposed to be better than Dyna-Mat, but also lighter. Think I can remember what it's called? Nope.

There's a company based in Lethbridge, AB called B-Quiet. Same sort of materials as DynaMat, but cheaper.

i used the expandable foam and construction grade window surround (goes outside the window under the siding) that i found at lowedepot and cut the sound by at least 6dB. i know that doesn't sound like a lot but it is and for the amount i spent on it; totaly worth it. and just for the record, all of it was done after the front seats and NO floor treatment. i imagine that if i went for hood, floor and door treatment, things would get REALLY quiet.

my audio sorce locally said he would sell me the adhesive back roll that is about 5' wide I forget how many long but he said he can do a sedan with a whole roll and still have some left over, a suv takes a roll and a half so I figure one roll will do two festys lol

check and see if your brother can get the roll, its easier to work with thank all the squares and you can custom cut for your doors and any acess pannels you want to acess in the future

I forgot to say he quoted me $150 for that roll

I cant wait to get my motor and transmission installed- I sprayed my whole car inside and outside with truck bed liner- the commercial stuff about 1/4 inch thick. Do you think it will be quite a bit quieter? Oh, maybe not... I did remove the doors... and windows.. and roof!
