  • Hey all, new here with a question...

I have a stock 1988 L. The car has been well cared for all it's life and at 210,000+ miles, it runs like new. I have put some time into relpacing many worn parts and getting the base car running nicely. I am now ready to get some frickin' wheels and new tires. I want to toss the 12" rims and crappy stock tires for some Enkei RS5 15"x6.5" and some toyo 195/45/15's. Looking around this seems to be a do-able project.

So now my question: The car needs paint, badly. I have never had a car re-painted so I am not sure what to look out for and what to ask for. I am in the SF bay area and am moving to Reno in the next two weeks. ALL suggestions are welcome. I am looking at a solid color, most likely dark blue or straight white. Insights?

    BTW, great forum.

    Wrong forum.

And what are you looking to do? Paint it yourself? Have a shop paint it? Most shops will have a book full of colors to look and chose from. I know my old shop had a paint mixing station right in their shop, so any color I wanted could be custom mixed up.

You want a full color change, that's everything on the outside, door jambs, etc. You probably also want some slight bodywork completed, as there may be dings and dents that even you can't see.

As for colors? I like the stock 88-89 blue color that was on the Festivas myself.

Umm, ok. I didn't know that I had to seek permission. There are only so many rims that will fit these cars you know and most of them look like garbage. Give it a rest.

Simon, yeah I am looking to having a shop paint it. Apartment living does not afford the ability to paint ones own car. How much is reasonable for body work? There are some dings in the body.

It'll depend on where you live (it really does matter in the cost of bodywork), if you know someone, the extent of the bodywork and the cost of paint.

For my first 2 Festivas, paint and minor bodywork (minor was not including the shaved hatch, doors, etc) with paint was around $2,000. After I knew the bodyshop better, they cut me a good deal on the rest of the bodywork the last time.

Just check with a shop, most of the times they'll give a free estimate.
