Just wondering if anyone has ever removed or installed a new headliner in their Festy.

I finally looked up today and saw some intresting things going on up there - I think a replacement is in order....:pale:
Are the headliners in these cars the annoying glue and fibre board type that you need a spatula to remove from the roof? Can I easily replace this thing, and are we talking a complete interior gut to do it?
If anybody has any info I'd really appreciate it!

First off, we need to know about your car....year basically....there are 2 differant ones. But it is not a major thing to replace. Take a moment and put your location in your profile....could help in the future plus there may be someone close that has something you need or a helpful hand.

I have not removed one but I have one that someone (mattswab) gave me and it is just one big molded piece. Like a fiberboard sorta.

Does is it a plug and play type deal or do you need to use 3M spray adhesive?

It sits up in there and is held in by the trim from what I can tell....but like I said I have not replaced one myself. But the one he gave me has no adhesive on the back of it. He did use a foam covering that he glued to it which looks pretty good.

theres these push pin type things on it, that kep it in place. if you open your hatch and sit in that space behind the backseat looking out the back. you look up and you can see the gidgets im talking about. not hard to remove. you pull the center out first then pry the whole thing. (i think the center pops out so dont pull it completely out) and i think theres a took you can use to get them out as well. i used a screwdriver but you have to be carefull cause theyre just thin plastic and chip easy.

i took mine out to recover. i used a plaid fabric with some hefty 3M adheisive spray. matched my purple/greyish fuzz interior

the auto seatbelts have the molded headliner where the older non auto have the vinyl bar type desighn. i hated the vinyl bar type i would like to have a solid one piece i was thinking of finding a solid one piece molded from a auto seat belt car and trying to add some foam board to make it a one piece for a non auto car. i never have dont any interior work but i assume that would be the easiest way to do it.

cool... I guess I know what i'll be doing this weekend.

I'm wondering whether I can get the one I have eyed up from the junkyard to fit inside the hatch for the drive home? Might be tough!

If you see a festiva with a headliner strapped to the roof flyin' down the highway, you can bet I'm not happy LOL

Again... What type of seat-belts do you have? Unless you car was imported from the US, you have manual belts & a vinyl headliner... It isn't anything like the pic fresh posted. You headliner is literally vinyl stretched out with fiberglas rods. hard to remove... but they are just flexible vinyl so you can roll it up and throw it in your back seat.

Sorry stefan I misunderstood your previous post.

Yes I have the regular seat belts, nothing fancy here - just the way I like it.
So I can remove it simply by taking off the interior trim pieces that cover it (i.e. front pillar mouldings) - or is that even necessary?

Thanks to all who threw in their two cents!

If you have the vinyl bar type, you will need to remove the A pillar moldings, B pillar moldings and very carefully remove the tabs that wrap around the windows (they're glued in) also there will be a black rubber track of sorts that fits on the sheetmetal around the front and back windshields. Last but not least, you have the plastic dowels going through the vinyl itself from one side of the roof to another. (if wish I took pics when I replaced mine - sorry)
You may want to check out the j/y to see if you can find a headliner in good shape. I got mine mint at the Chilliwack pick-a-part for like $10-$15
