  • how to paint plastic chrome?

I am getting ready to paint my grille on my wife's car and it is currently the plastic chrome finish. I want to paint it black. How can i paint it without peeling or other issues? I've never painted chrome plastic before... I thought i'd post here rather than 'off topic' Thanks!

printed circuit board etching solution will sufficiently dull the chrome to allow proper adhesion.

I've read in a model car magazine once that Pine-Sol will strip the chrome off the plastic...That being said, they were talking about chrome on styrene plastic. I don't know if it will work on your grille...
The left lane? Are you crazy!!! I never drive in the left lane...It's full of freaks driving the wrong way and charging right at you!!!

nope, Pine-Sol won't affect the chrome on auto plastic. The chrome on models is a high reflectivity aluminum, not actual chrome.

            vacuum metallizing

Too bad you don't know someone that has a big vacuum metallizing chamber.
I saw one in action at a division of Bee Chemical out of Lansing, Illinois (just south of Chicago).
They place the objects in the chamber, suck out all the air and then float the chromium up onto the surface of the plastic. They chrome all the plastic Ford logos like that. The tank is huge.

I've had decent results with lightly sand blasting then using epoxy primer such as
PPG DP 50 LF. I've done chromed steel bumpers the same way but was more agressive with the sand blasting. Hope this helps.

I was reading on some Mazda forums that people were using repetitive soakings of bleach to take the chrome finish off of the plastic badges on the car. looked to work quite well, but it might take a lot of bleach.
