  • Installing an aftermarket tach on a car without one

I have a 1994 Aspire and I want to install a tach. How would I do that? There isnt one on it already so would it have something hooked to the engine or is it through the ECU?

This is the one Im looking at

      Tach Install

So if you know how to pull you cluster it's no problem. In an aspire you pull that lilttle black piece of trim , it just snaps out. Then there is 2 or 4 phillips
screws to undo. Grab the cluster and pull it towards the drivers side. Then you will be able to reach you hand aroud and undo the spedo cable. Just squeese the two fat ends and pull. Then undo the electrical harness. Take a close looke at the harness. there will be an empty spot where a wire goes in
but no electrode is present on the plug. That is your tach wire. Splice into your tach and your good to go.

I got the tach. I took off the cluster but I dont see how it would work. It says to connect it to the ignition coil. Anyone care to help me?

Is the wiring different between the Festive and Aspire? I have a 94 Aspire if it makes a difference.

if you have a wiring diagram of the aspire, you should see a wire that is labled "tach Sig" this is the wire you have to splice into. that OR find the ground side of the IGN modual and tap into that to get a signal. I'd try the first one though seeing that all aspires used the same dash harness even if it didn't come w/ a tach stock.

I'm assuming you want to hook up the illumination for the tach to light up with the rest of tyhe dash right? well if thats the case i would find the wire running off the headlight switch that is hot when you turn the knob to the parking light setting. tap into that for the juice and run your ground for the gauge. wish i could be more specific but i have never seen a wiring diagram for the 98 festiva (aspire in the us).
