Everyone really wants to know how fast there Festiva can go right? No one wants to try to find, or heaven forbid pay for one of those overpriced Kia Pride 120mph clusters right? Of course. But heck, with this mod, you can do better. For pretty cheap, depending on your existing parts, you can turn your cluster into a 140mph.
What you need:
-Stock Festiva Cluster w/Tachometer (you must have a tach cluster)
-Late 80's Mazda RX7 cluster (thats what I used, but any of them with the same connectors on the back should work, you may have to do some hunting for one that works)
-Grinder/Sharpener (like they use to sharpen blades)
-Screw driver
-Electrical Tape (optional)
-LED strips (optional, but otherwise your new speedometer isn't lighted well)
How:
This is basically a transplant operation. This requires some work, but I will add pictures later. Remove the speedometer plate and speedometer/tripometer mechanism from the RX7 cluster. Next take out the screws on the back of the festiva cluster holding all the mechanisms connected to the black face plate in place. If you do this right it should allow the whole cluster mechanisms to fall forward, be carefull with this. Pull the festiva speedometer needle off and remove the two screws holding it to the plate, allowing it fall off the plate. Next take and remove the tripometer mechanism from the festiva speedometer assembly and replace the RX-7 tripometer assembly (so the trip reset button works). Also, remove other mechanisms from the RX-7 speedo assembly until it is identicle to what the festiva one looked like (the RX-7 has a third mile counter that I dont know what is for and an electronic thing on the bottom of it, get rid of all the crap). Next take and grind down the RX-7 faceplate so it will fit on top of the festiva one. Now put the faceplate on top of the festiva one and screw the modified RX-7 mechanism in to replace yours. You may notice some of the old festiva markings still show, if you don't like this, cover them with black electrical tape. Also, if you want, wire some LED strips in while your in there, it will help with lighting. Replace your speedometer needle. Now just put everything back together and you have a working Festiva 140mph cluster. On mine, I wasn't carefull, and now the tripometer won't work, but whatever. You may have to do some trial and error work of your own to get it how you want it, but it does work. And the speedo is accurate.
No you can't use the Festiva speedo assembly, even though it looks the same, its not, the spring is different, so if you use it with the RX7 faceplate, it will look like your going 40 when you go like, 20.
Good luck! I will add pictures later today or tommorow.
