  • New paintjob (cost ideas please?)

    (Australia)

    Hi guys,
I've had my 93 WA Festiva in the family since 1997, it's been in my possession for a little while now, long story short it was hail damaged back in 2005 and the insurance company looks like cashing out on the policy and paying me the cars insured value since its actually a repairable write-off. That sum comes to about $3800 AUD ($3000 USD) - I have this as a starting point to fix up the body and respray it.

I have no idea on respray costs, I'll find out more soon but just wanted some feedback here as well. Ball park figures maybe. Also, since I'll be respraying it is there any cost benefit to sticking with white (its current colour) or is it the same whichever colour I want to go? White has never been big with me so I'll probably pick a new colour.

Any feedback welcome, ball park figures, things to consider etc would all be appreciated.

This is a hard one to give figures for. I would start by calling a few places and gathering quotes.
I have a friend in Blacktown, Eastern Creek Smash repairs (they painted mine- three times now). Billy is the manager. Give him a call and see how you go??

It also might be asier to get the car to each shop for a better idea too.

Thanks Festymick, I forgot to report back but a few things changed since my first post.

      1. The pay-out option I mentioned was wrong so no pay out as such
      2. Back to "pay the excess, get what I can fixed up" I went to Elite Smash Repairers and the boss had a look over it and said he reckons it might be doable without being a repairable write-off now, so we went back inside to do the claim and the claim came back with a surprising Insured value of $4300! That was accurate to 2005. We were all happy with that, he said plenty can be done with that figure.

So we're going to stick with white just to keep the price down, they'll fix all the hail damage panels PLUS (hopefully) they will fix some of the "other damage" in the claim too And what can't be covered I'll pay the rest so the entire car can be resprayed at the same time. We're gonna take all the strips off and if money permits I'm planning to redo all the rubbers etc too. In short I'm hoping it will look closer to the way it left the factory back in 1993!

I have to source a drivers side front and rear door though, as I copped some hit and run damage at Christmas, I'm told it's easier (cheaper) to get new doors in whatever colour than to repair mine.

So I'll be up for $500 (insurance excess) plus however much all the rest will cost, but I think it'll be worth it. I'll take a lot of progress photos for anyone interested.

Then aesthetically it'll be looking good, as money permits all the rest (handling & go fast bits) will be done. Although don't anyone hold their breath on that one, this project will take years, bit by bit I'll get there.
