  • replacing the door and hatch panels

While waiting to rebuild the engine in my car (waiting for some extra money and have to finish rebuilding the 2.7 from my baby's momma's dodge intrepid), i decided to do a little work on the interior of my 89 festiva. the previous owners put a rather large hole in the panel around the window handle after the regulator bolts worked their way loose (this is now fixed, cost a total of $1 at home depot), and managed to tear some holes in the vinyl, Also, the cover that goes on the back hatch and behind the back seat are both messed up pretty bad... so i decided to make some new ones.

I went to home depot last night and bought an 4x8 sheet of work board and asked an employee to cut it in to 4x2' sections (had to fit it in the festiva somehow ) and then headed home. I choose the best of the two door panels and removed the vinyl covering, i also removed the cover for the hatch (the back of the seat will come later... i need to make a template from scratch).

I then traced the old panels and marked all the hole locations (minus the window handle... that is going to be marked from the other doors panel)

After getting everything marked, i cut out the panels by means of utility knife (probably not the best... but its what i had to work with). In the pictures below, i still need to drill the holes and cut out the hole for the door handles

I marked holes for speakers, though I am still trying to decide if i should cut them out or not. Here in a little bit I am going to go purchase some black RV Vinyl and cover the new panels. they wont have all the styling like the originals, but atleast they wont have holes. I will post some pictures when they are done.

I used PVC board for mine they are a little lighter than the chip board but I used the same process you are

I'm not done with the door panels yet but I plan to do some stitching and insert some raised sections below the foam to make it look custom - I'm using the Vinyl with the thin foam already glued to it
