Question about learning to paint....

I have decided to put some money into tools and such, and learn how to paint myself. I know almost nothing about painting cars. I have read what I could find on the net about painting cars, I just can't find a guide on what equipment to use? I have been told I need a HVLP gravity feed spray gun, compressor, water separator and a pressure regulator. I have searched for these items on the net but there is like 100 different kinds for each one. I am not made of money, but I also want to put my money into equipment that is going to last. I know a few people on the boards have painted their owns cars, so I thought I'd ask. Any help on what equipment I should buy would be great! Then I'll worry about learning to paint..lol

Just painted mine last weekend. I have a 50 gallon compressor with no water separator. For the primer I used a siphon gun and for the final sealer and color coat I used a HVLP gun. I borrowed this from a friend. The HVLP sprayed much nicer. Here is a good forum on auto body work: http://www.autobody101.com/forums/index.php . I spent a good chunk of money on a great HVLP gun - $300. The rest, go with cheap (aka - Harbor Freight). The compressor will come in handy for MANY automotive tasks, so get the largest you can afford. If you have an electric motor shop in your town, I'd also get a 2-stage with the motor and compressor separate, as well. Easily repairable later on. The single stage compressors are basically throw away items.

Regulator, water separator, etc, get cheap from Harbor Freight.
