  • Interior panels prep work?

    Whats up everyone.

Yesteday I pulled the the back seat out aas well as the panelsand I wanted to know if there was any prep work like sanding or clear coating needed for the panels. I read all the panel threads and didnt seem to find a definite answer. I will be using krylon fusion. Do you just clean up the panels then spray a light coat then apply a thicker coat?

    Sand any deep gouges smooth
But otherwise clean throughly, soap and water, then wipe down with 70% isopropanol and let dry.
    Do not use Acetone.
Panels are ABS, if I'm not mistaken, acetone will dissolve the surface; creating a solvated soft and tacky surface that the paint will not adhere to.
Then apply multiple thin coats of paint.
Paint instruction should also give similar advise.

Light coats! make the first coat light, allow it to flash off a couple of minutes, then coat the panel. I have not used the Krylon product, but our SEM line here at work has you use a hot water and soap wash with a THOROUGH rinse with clear water. Follow with a wax and grease remover, or the alchohol as above using two rags, one with the solvent, followed right behind by a dry rag to pick up the contaminates beffore they dry back to the surface when the alcohol flashes off (evaporates). Remember that anything on the rag like a fabric softner etc. will transfer to the panel while you are doing this. I would recommend you try the back side of the panel before the front to make sure you have everything clean, and all silicone(Armorall etc) off the panel to make sure you don't have problems. SEM also uses a product called SandFree which is a solvent in a spray can that opens up the pores of the plastic that you use first on hard plastics, then you spray the paint wet on wet. The Krylon product is suppose to have this built into it, so you should not need it using what you are though. The clear *could* be a tricky thing to try, because you will need to find out if the solvents that thin the paint in the can will lift the paint off the surface. Try that on the back too.
