  • MX-3 GS SE Leather Steering Wheel

Yep, I found one. Now I'm trying to get it installed in my Festy. I know it can be done. Gro Harlem has it done to his. Does it just bolt on? It's cold and I don't want to buy a steering wheel puller if I don't have to.

It can be done. As far as removal of your current steering wheel goes, pop off the little square Ford logo, partially undo the big nut in the middle the wiggle, pull and wiggle and pull some more. It will come off with a little effort. When it lets go you will know why you left the nut on! It helps too if you change your hand position as you wiggle and pull.

Once the wheel has released from the shaft, make a note of its position relative to the steering shaft, remove the nut completely and pull off the steering wheel.

I don't know if you have to make any changes to the MX-3 wheel but installation should be just the reverse of installation.

    Good luck,

Bah, don't be a wuss... Remove the nut and then grab both sides of the wheel and just start pulling from side to side. It'll come off, and I've removed my wheel at least 30 times, and removed countless numbers of wheels from junkyard cars without EVER coming close to hitting myself.

Simon, me too. Take the nut off. Grab the wheel on the sides with both hands, pull on one side and push on the other, and then reverse. If it is not loose, move your hands to the top and bottom and do the same thing. They pop off without a wheel puller. I've used a wheel puller but I tend to bend the bolts on those so I quit.

I really do know how to pull a wheel. I just wanted to make sure the splines are the same.

I don't see any reason why they would be different. I believe Mazda used the same spline for all the older cars. I got a leather sterring wheel out of a protege DX and it fit in just fine.

it fits perfectly & its easier tahn hell to install.

The hub is 21mm. Unscrew the 3 10mm screws (or use a philips) and pop off the center cover. Loosen the 21mm and remove it. Then grab the wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock and wiggle it firmly but not violently back and forth. After a little while (even if it seems like it isn't coming loose) it'll beging to have play side-to-side. Keep doing it and it'll wiggle off.

Installing it is pretty much reverse of removing it. Just throw it onto your festiva, hopefully you'll get it straight since therea re lik 32 positions you can put it in. Then tighten the nut and it'll secure into place.

The horn should work too, just attach the lil spade terminal to ur existing hornpad thing and it'll work good

Oh yeah, that's a nice looking wheel.

I need to do some winter 'yard tripping myself.

Yeah... those are cruise control buttons... I was thinking about trying to integrate them into a dual stage boost controller... but I don't think that would work.

With enough time anything is possible, sometimes a few beers helps though.
