Spray can?

now i know already that spraycan paint job isn't going to be as great as a professional job but how well do they actually turn out on cars? i have done models and stuff but not actual cars. so if anyone has done a spray can paintjob let me know how it turned out!

It looked like crap, I done a car with a can like 30 years ago , from 50 feet it looked OK but when you got close you could see the overlap on the paint , not enough paint flow to give you good coverage , I did do a "jersey suede" that's black primer then wet sanded it and it looked smooth after that. some how I think I should not admitted all that but hey we all do crazy stuff when we were young , right :roll: Good luck

I did a fender a few years ago. It looked terrible. Better off using a roller and brush.

Save some money and go to Maaco, they can do a decent job if you prep the car ahead of time.

I did a fender with a spray can and it turned out really nice. Most people don't take thier time or prep the surface properly. Spray cans CAN get you a nice paint job, but it takes alot more work than it is worth. Also it will not turn out as nice as a profesional paint job.

yeah it's too tough to get a nice finish on a complete car. i have done things as large as a bumper on my silver aspire, but it takes alot of work. just buy a spray gun and do it right. they aren't that expensive (as an added bonus you can practice on all your friends cars after they find out ya have a paint gun :twisted: )

I've helped paint a friend's Ranger in HS, using cans. Took an arse load of cans and beer to do (4 coats of drkblue +2 coats of clear ) but it looked good except where Joe sneezed and speckled the rear bumper and the exhaust pipe.

As for my recent touch job
my big fuub was not checking the type of finish on the black enamle I bought.

matte enamel with gloss clear over it = fuggy distortions. but it only needed to cover the bare steel until spring or summer when it's warm enough to strip and do a better job. definitely going to invest in a sprayer for my compressor since can's get brutal on the thumbs and index fingers after a while.

I painted my 88 Festiva in the summer of '04 with spray cans.

did all the bodywork correctly, did all the prep work right, too (very important!!!) , then primed and painted. the prep work took the most time, because I did everything as professionally as I could, from using tack cloths, and prep-sol, to priming. I removed the head and tail lamps, and also removed the hood, since you can't paint it while it's on the car (spray cans have to be held upright, aimed at a vertical surface)

I also clear-coated it, which is why it still looks good almost two years later in Pittsburgh weather.

Yes, up close, when it's clean, you can tell the overlap marks from the spray cans. But, with just a little road grime (easy to get in Pittsburgh), it looks decent even up close. the car was white when new, so I decided to do a "mini-cooper" look to it, with white top and mirrors and Ford Blue for the rest.

I'll try to post a pic soon, but remember, for about $90 worth of paint, it CAN come out half-decent if you take your time and do it right!

Oh no...(insert horror movie scream). Please don't spray paint your car- Save your money and get AT LEAST a Maaco job. If you spend $100 on spray paint (and seriously- where do you find that many paint cans all the same color?), you'll just have to re-do everything in a couple months when you realize it looks like crap, you can never wax it and be proud of it, and your friends all laugh at you- you'll wish that you never did it. THEN, when you finally do take it to a body shop, they're going to charge you a boat load extra just to get the spray paint off. Also, it takes a lot of experience to know how to properly sand and tape a car. If you don't do it right, you'll hate your car.

Short story long- save your pennies. You'll thank me later.

Believe me, the only reason I painted my car that way is because there are no Maaco shops around here! yes, if there is one, go there!!!

But for people like me, who kinda like doing that kind of stuff, but don't have the equipment for a professional paint job at home, spray cans can do the trick. I'll try to post pics soon.


P.S.
Yes, I CAN wax the car. I clear-coated it.. as I said, even after two years in the pittsburgh weather, It looks good. Never had a bad comment about the car. My girlfriend likes it. also, Frankly, if all a girl cares about it what kind of car you drive or what it looks like, look for another girl.

OK, all that being said, again, go to a professional paint shop!
