I may be coming into a "new" Festiva soon.
It's red.
I want blue. Dark "midnight" blue. I've wanted a blue car for ages and ages. Luxstiva is red and that's enough red for me!
This car has nice paint. No visible rust. No dents to speak of. If I buy it, she will eventually become "Speedstiva." (My B6 MTX project.)
Since Speedstiva has to be BLUE I need to "make it so."
How would one go about repainting a pretty nice finish in place?
I figure some light sanding and then either primer or several coats of the actual color. Then maybe some clearcoat.
Oh, no spray cans! I'd take the time to properly prep the car by taking a lot of it apart and making sure it's ready to accept paint. Then I'd rent a good quality spray gun and get some practice on other car parts first.
I don't want to sand to bare metal. The original red paint is intact and I don't wish to disturb it.
Also, I don't necessarily want a paint job as nice as Matt's Jazz Blue BP. It doesn't have to be perfect, just protect the car, look okay from a few feet away, and last awhile without rubbing off when someone touches it.
Is this realistic?
Am I way off base with just roughening up the current finish?
Karl
