  • Aftermarket steering wheel

Im out there looking for a nice steering wheel for my shogun build.

What's out there , and do I need some special hub? if so are they still available?

If you haven't already noticed it, many Mazda stock steering wheels will bolt right on. Early RX7s, Mercury Tracer, 323s, etc. Usually around years '86 to '89 or so would be pretty safe.

Don't get a Grant. Most aftermarket steering wheels use a Momo or Nardi/Personal bolt pattern. You can buy the adapter hub from a Miata that has both bolt patterns from ebay for pretty cheap.

I have an '80 RX-7 wheel which bolted right on. Very old-skool, center horn button, four-spoke.

Yesterday I bought an '86 RX-7 wheel which is nicer (more modern, thicker padding, horn buttons at 4 and 8 o'clock), but didn't bolt on. I could just get the splines on but it wouldn't go any farther, about another inch or so. I think there is a subtle difference in the bore and/or taper of the Festy shaft vs. the newer RX-7 hole, in front of the splines. I am taking it to a machine shop to see if they can slightly bore the steering wheel hole out a little. I can check it right after they do it, since I will drive Larry there. If it doesn't work, oh well I'll just keep the older RX-7 wheel on.

I have the same RX7 wheel style you do. I think mine's from a '79. I also have used an '88-'89 Tracer wheel (going back on Luxstiva) and an early nineties 323 wheel (non airbag).

Would 323 in the early 90s work? Theres plenny of that on ebay as aftermarket hubs and steerings.

To be honest, I'm not sure what year 323 I pulled my steering wheel from. It could have been anywhere from '88 to '94. It is a three spoke with mostly softer vinyl in the middle areas. Maybe I can get a pic of it up in the next few days. PM me to remind me if you really want to see it and make sure it fits.

Here is what it looks like. I found a pic on google images. I still have to try mine on to make fully sure it will work, but I'm pretty sure it will. This pic is from a '91 323, so this design should be about the same through the years of that model: 1990 to 1994.
