  • Altered tach cluster

I grabbed a speedo from a 92 626 and stuck it in one of my tach clusters. A bit of dremeling was required on the lip at the bottom of the cover in front of the original speedo, and I had to enlarge one of the speedo mount holes on the back of the cluster. It's not really complete, but everything works. The temp needle just clears the speedo face, and the speedo needle clears the temp needle. I had to sacrifice the tripmeter tho. I used flat black spray paint to get rid of the original speedo's numbers and markings.

I fixed it so the pic shows. I saw a similar one with a RX 7 speedo.

Hey Brian....this is the second thread I have seen you say you fixed it so it showed. Both times now I had viewed the pic several times before you were on. Am I missing something?

BTW, when I was at the JY getting this speedo, I also saw one from a Protege (1996 maybe?) with the tripmeter reset on the same side as ours. Using that speedo, the tripmeter could probably be retained. Of course, you could put it in the non-tach cluster too, if you have an external tach or don't care about having one at all.

This job was fairly easy and quick. Took maybe an hour or so. As I tried fitting the new speedo, it became clear what had to be done. If you try this, make sure you lay the rear screws out in the same pattern that they are on the greenboard, so you can easily figure out which ones go where. You don't actually have to remove the greenboard itself from the white plastic housing, but everything else has to come off.

I deliberately left out one screw--the upper right one on the face of the temp gauge, a long thin black screw. This was left off so the new speedo face would sit flat over the old one. There are two screws holding the temp gauge on, on the back, plus one still there in the front.

Doesn't look too sharp IMO. Is it at least somewhat accurate?

Earlier today I was working on a 1986 RX-7 speedo, but couldn't get the wiring sorted out quite right, so decided to drop it until after FM4. Here is a pic of it before I started hacking away at it. I had to sacrifice the two left gauges, Volts and Oil Pressure, to make it narrow enough. I have an oil pressure gauge anyway tho. This should be fairly easy, because the idiot lights are all somewhere else in this RX-7, not in the instrument cluster.

It's not complete cosmetically; just slapped it together as a proof-of-concept. I will install it tmw probably, and tinker with it to clean up the looks after Madness. I'd like it to look nice, but I'm more of a functional-oriented kinda guy anyway. Accuracy-wise, it's the same revs as ours, so should be no different.

                        Lexus

I wonder how big the Lexus gauge cluster is? Maybe it might fit inside a Festiva cluster? What is the differnce between electroluminescence and Indiglo?

                        Who wants to test it?
