I haven't started looking for myself yet, but I'd try some home improvement type and hardware stores for various types of mesh, especially plastic mesh. Also, search online for more ideas or online stores that may carry that stuff.

Besides mesh, keep your eye out for other types of grating, fabric, grilles from other cars that can be cut out and adapted. Especially if you can get it FREE from curbside or nearly free from a yard sale (spring's coming!), do so.

Whatever it is, it should be lightweight and not prone to warping from radiator or summer heat.

That is an 88 grill, modded, by cutting out the center bar, and fiberglassing up the holes left from the cuts, with a fiberglass body repair kit found at any auto parts store. There are articles on how to do it, in the Articles/Mods section, easily found with the search function. Quite a few peeps have this mod.
I dont have a lot a pics as I just got a good camera and I just did the grill mod not long ago.

The mesh wont rust, its aluminum!
Thin coat of primer, and a couple coats of "Trim" paint and its good to go. Mine is not bolted in or zip tied. I bent the bottom 1 inch of the mesh 90 degrees (forward towards front of car) made a little cutout on the bottom bend, so it is level with bottom of grill, slid it over the "tab" for the 1 center screw, and slid it over the the tabs at each end. It holds itself in place with the screws on the tabs.
