The cowl is an area of high pressure on the outside of most cars because that's where the hood air hits the steeper ramp of the windshield area. The vents are there to take advantage of that high pressure air for the cabin ventilation. If you open that engine compartment panel you may compromise the cabin air and also let in engine compartment hot air and fumes.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I'm pretty sure. Consult some auto aerodynamic sources to check on it.

Others here may confirm this too.

That is true about the heat and fumes ect going into the cowl...... damn. Oh well the vents I bought should be sufficent to not cause a bubble of dead air.

Absolutely correct. Two easy ways to solve this issue if you're greatly concerned with pressurization in the engine bay are either to facilitate the displacement of air underneath the car (which is rather difficult) or creating apertures in the hood itself... especially in the back corners. Some people like to do this by propping up the back up the hood with washers, whereas others opt to drill holes.

No need for any washers on the Festiva, since the brackets mount to the side of the hood. Just loosen the two 10mm bolts on each of the two hood brackets, and adjust the hood to your liking. It will give you up to about an inch raise just by readjusting the bolts.

The poor mans hood cowl is a good idea but I'm gunna just use the vents I bought. They are 4x8" and I have one for each corner. They aren't the biggest but it will help relive a bit of pressure and heat, I don't really like the look of the hood being raised up either.
