  • tach help please

why would my tach jump all the way up to 8000rpm when i hook up the red to poss battery (to test for power), then black to ground, white to nothing (because i didnt need the light), green to green/yellow stripe rpm signal wire by sti. 1993 1.3 festiva L. I also tried red to fuse box. when it was hooked up i ungrounded the sti and it dropped to 7950, so then tried revving the motor and even at 7950 the tach needle would not move when i revved it. did i do something wrong or does my tach need to be calibrated? i dont know the tach's brand but its black with a 4,6,8 switch on back witch i tried all three setting and got same results. it has a shift point adjuster that is adjusted from the center witch turns a second needle to what ever rpm you want. i tried turning that still got same as before. please help

Everything gets hooked up lol. I can't check right now but I think the green does get hooked up to the yellow and blue. Someone on here did a small write up.
