  • Anybody Do a Paint Roller Paint Job?

I've been watching and reading a lot on doing the Rustoleum paint roller paint jobs and getting very motivated and excited to do this soon. Theres a lot of great videos on Youtube showing you exactly how to do it.

I've been asked to make this vid a million times. So here it is.This is a how-to regarding the 'Rustoleum technique'. I go over everything from mixing the ...

Just spray the Rustoleum. A lot less work and it will probably look better. Which reminds me I have to polish my Rustoleumed Jetta today.

Harbor freight has a paint gun on sale from 25$ to 12.99 with a coupon its 9.99

It says it sprays most oil based paints, but i dont know anything about it, or what that really means. I just hope i can use it to primer/paint/clearcoat my car when the time comes.

I know it has to be better than buying 1000 cans of spray paint, or doing 3 hours of sanding between coats.

Nate (Skeeter's Keeper) did his car in blue rolled on Rustoleum and it turned out pretty well.

Here ya go, from our "articles" at the bottom of the main page:

That thread should tell you what you need to know.

I've painted numerous cars with a $10 Wagner Power Painter. The Rustoleum was thinned with mineral spirits. Apply several thin coats. Apply next coat when tacky.

I did hulk with the roll on method. Check the link in my sig for progress pics from start to finish. Turned out really well but it's definitely a good bit of work. Fun though!

Used a roller on the Aspire. I didn't wet sand or anything outrageous. Only used one can I figure only spent $20. I could of wet sand and would of been one heck of a paint job. Why didn't I you ask.. 2 weeks after I painted it some idiot at work opened a door into it. Everyone is amazed how good it looks with what little work I put into it.

Looks pretty good Eric, I'm sure it'd look really good with some wet sanding and polish.

Jtug, it does seem like it'd take at least 3 days of painting and sanding, so I might do what you did. My friend has a nice compressor I could use. But then again, it seems like it might be fun doing the roller technique. I may just do the hood at first to get a feel for it and work out any probs then I'll do the whole car. Looks like a lot of fun and hard work at the same time but the results will be worth it, especially when you get to tell people you did it yourself.

I primed and painted the roof of a Neon and it looked darn good! No one noticed it was painted with a roller. If you thin it to a milk like consistency it even comes out nice and shiny with no sanding or buffing!! (at least it did for me!!)

if spraying the paint use acetone not the mineral spirits everyone uses when they roll it..The paint wont be as shiny and take too long for it to dry..Laquer thinner is also pretty good. Check out my festy on the 50 dollar paint job on the search button. it came out nicer with the gun. trust me. Rolling red was a pain due to the paint being shiny only in some areas. and there were a lot of roll marks..

Sounds like a good idea to me. Try the roller method on one or two body panels and see what you think. Maybe try two or three different methods to compare. Then make your decision based upon the quality of results and how much effort you are willing to put forth.

rustoleum is enamel. Make sure that the thinner is compatible. Lacquer thinner is NOT! Don't know about acetone.

I used mineral spirits. The only real problem I had was the roller soaking up too much paint. Should of taken the time to squeeze it out every panel.
