I've noticed recently that my fuel guage does not show full after a fiilup, even if the gas spills out. And never gets down to the empty line ,even after 9+ gallons used. Any Ideas?

Recently, some of my Festies don't read "F" right after a fillup, but after a bit of driving (presumably when the battery recharges from the start), they do. Perhaps that says something about the health of my batteries?
Every one has always gone into freefall after reaching 1/4, yet never take more than 8.2 or 8.3 gallons, even when they're bouncing off "E." It's hard to believe the tank holds 10 gallons.88L black, dailydriver

I always thought it was the tank baffles impeding the flow of gas in the tank. It takes some driving to level it all out, and when taking curves, accelerating, braking, etc. it can affect the guage.
Also, the float and arm are not perfectly related to what the gauge shows. They should only be taken as a rough guide to how much gas you have.
I figure that I get at least 30mpg and fill up when I reach around 200 miles. On a freeway trip I figure 35mpg and stop to fill up around 300 miles. My mpg figures here are "worst case" numbers, not what I expect. I also don't want my gas tank to run too low and I tend to keep it above 1/4 tank. I very seldom put in more than 8 gallons; it's usually more like 6.5 to 7.5.
I keep an eye on how many mpgs I'm getting to see how the car is doing.
