  • carpet question, Dying carpet

I am reupholstering my interior and while I have the seats out, i figuered I would dye the grey carpet to match.

Will the grey carpet dye black? or is it a material that will not dye?

also if it will dye....is it flexible enough to throw in an industrial washing machine?...or is it to stiff from being molded?

Thanx in advance for your help guys.

im not an expert by any means this is strictly based on opinion. but im pretty sure its to stiff from being molded to wash also i think it would mess up the material if you washed it. and i cant see y it wouldnt dye. like to hear how it goes if you do tho! good luck!

okay so throwing in 3 or 4 dye pack in the washer may be out of the question.

however, if it does hold dye...i know walmart and other stores sell a fabric spray dye. it is almost like spray painting it, but with dye...lol

that would be better than buying a 165$ carpet on ebay.

will do buddy. dying a decent carpet is much better then spending money on a new one i'll try dying it first to see what happens.

You better wash it first. I washed mine by taking it out and spraying it with garden hose and using some carpet cleaner and other soap. Others have used a pressure washer, which may be quicker and more thorough. You should also look for rust under the carpet so you can repair it now. Here's what was under my carpet in my '91:

Here's my build thread so you can see the pics of my floor repair and whatever else may help you out:
