  • Shift Knobs...3rd times a Charm

Hey guys, don't really post here a lot but thought id post this mod up.

    Back Story:
So in total ive owned 30 cars, in those 30 cars ive had 3 festivas. I finally have one im not selling, if the motor blows. It will get swapped. Until then im happy with the B3.

Also within those 30 cars the majority have been manual. Ive never been fond of the stock Festiva Shift Knob, but i couldn't decide until now which one i wanted to replace it with.

    Then i remembered. :tongue3:

The most comfortable Shift knob and car i ever owned was my 2003 Vw Gti.

I liked most things about it except when i started having problems.

Anywho heres some pics of my progression thru shift knobs.

    Stock:

Works Fine, but wanted something a little more interesting.

    2nd:

This was from my Scion Xa Rs 1.0
My parents are moving to FL this year and told me to get all my stuff out of there attic, this was in one of my many boxes of extra car parts. I used this for about a week before my new knob came in.

    3rd:

    A Mk4 Gti Shift Knob
    Another Pic

Unfortunately unless i make the shift rod shorter the trim on the bottom won't work. But im ok with it not working.

Overall i love the new feel.

Also everyone should know that none of the new ones were direct fit, i made an adapter at work for the CF Red one to fit, then when i got the GTI knob i filled it with resin, then drilled and tapped it to size.

    Welp thats all for now,
Im thinking about putting more GTI parts inside, just because i like the feel better.

Possibly GTI Seats, Steering wheel...., E Brake Boot Cover, Pedals. Kinda trying to make it so everything i touch is VW.

If anyone is interested in the Red CF shift knob im Selling it.
$25.00 Obo, its just gonna sit around my apartment now that im not using it.

    Thanks for Reading,

    Andrew.

You can change the coin in those knobs with some persuasion and a bobby pin or knife... grab any other 5 speed coin that's the correct pattern, they generally are all the same size... or make a Ford coin and fill the gap with resin.

I had a pick/bump hammer for a shift knob in my F150 last year. I like "odd" things for knobs.

I keep checking local junk yards for mk4 and up gti seats. As soon as I get them that weekend there going in. I plan to use the existing sliders from the gti and make new brackets to mount to existing festiva locations.

JesterATC, you might still be able to use the trim piece. Check out the Kia Rio short shift. It might fit...

I still have the trim pieces. But I couldnt think of a way to make it work. Other than hacking a gti center console and modifying that. But I didnt want to be troubled

Love my escort shift knobs in all my five speed festivas. Comfy, right pattern, match the interior, and they are a direct fit, no modding of anything required. The fact that the escort console and shift boot can be adapted to a festiva without too much hacking is just icing on the already tasty cake! Though that gti one is pretty cool looking I must say.
                      No festiva for me ATM...

Heres the interior of my Old 2003 Gti 1.8T

Heres a closer look at the stock shifter in the stock location

I guess the reason i keep looking at GTI parts is cause i had such good luck with them.

I loved my Seats, I loved the Shifter, and i loved the soft touch plastics.

Now im looking at VW Turbo, Side mount intercooler, and Pancake Pipe.
                        Like this!

                        But thats for another thread....
