  • Headliner

Recovered my headliner tonight. Went to JoAnn Fabrics today, they sell headliner material with foam backing. Bought 2 yards at $10.95 a yard and then some 3M headliner adhesive from the auto parts store. So I have about $35 in this.
Took about 1.5 hours to complete. Just lay down the material on the headliner and fold the new material back half way then spray the adhesive on the material and headliner. When dry just carefully smooth out that side. Then fold over the other side and spray both with adhesive and when dry unfold and smooth. Go carefully. Also you will need a few razor blades to trim the material. I went thru about 6 of them. I was surprised how quickly they dull.

Looks good... I want to switch mine up for a first gen headliner since I've added my ragtop and removed the automatic seatbelts... Just haven't had the time to mess around with it...

Well if I get the 88 interior next weekend it looks like I'll be doing another headliner from what your saying. Is there a big enough difference between the headliners?

          headliner

Lookin'good! An easy way to add a custom touch to an often overlooked(underlooked...?)part of the car-Cut a design out of 1/8" foam posterboard( or similar light material),glue that to the headliner, then cover it,paying close attention to pressing the edges down around the design.I've done this for door panels and it works great.Flames, tribal,Ford logo, cars nickname, etc.Plus,it gives you something to look up to!

Matt - Yes... There's a nice gap from where the auto seatbelt covers go when you remove them for the older interior.

Those headliners are held in by stress type rods. Remove it carefully or it'll rip. If you grab on the rod and twist half and half, it should come out on one side and then you can remove it from the other side.

The old headliner is a soft vinyl tho. Covering it might be hard.

              Just a quick question,

Does the headliner come off in one rigid piece? It appears on my 92 that its just thin flimsy vinyl.

              Thanks

My 90 has a shell and came off in 1 piece. Apparently there is a difference per what simon said between the older and newer festivas. I guess I'll find out this weekend when I pull the other interior.

I may end up just using my 90 seatbelt and related interior and then sell the 88 seatbelt stuff as a package.

Ian, is it possible that your sport has the older style? Do you have automatic seatbelts? If not, you probably have what in the US would be old-style (88-89)

The old style IS just flimsy vinyl with 4-5 flexible ribs holding it up. I don't see how it could be re-covered without stitching an all new headliner.

Ian - From what I've seen in the US Festivas (Maybe it changed for the Canada ones) is that the 88-89 is flimsy and there are small foam inserts in the roof for sound insulation/protection (:lol and the 90+ are a one piece with a hard foam/molded board.

                      Thanks for the input.

The Canadian Festivas never had the automatic belts. And yes, my headliner is the flimsy vinyl type.

I've already talked to one of my daughters about sewing up a new headliner for me.

Would it be safe to assume that the rigid headliner only came on cars with the automatic belts?

As far as I can tell, yes. That's why they redesigned it from what I can tell.

I need to pull a soft one and cut it to fit my headliner, as well as redo the underside of my ragtop.

Yes, all Canadian cars are soft vinyl headliners. The hard headliners are totally due to the guides for the motorized death traps! I mean Seat belts for lazy ppl.

I replaced my liner last year, and its now pretty black(alkantara) with red stitching.

                          Thanks

I got the vinyl headliner from the 88LX today. Way different than my 90. Since I want to use the entire interior from the 88 I will use this liner. Got it out without a problem just have to be very careful where its glued. Installed without any problems either.
