  • Installing a cargo light

I want to install a cargo light in my 90L. The wiring should be there so not a problem. Do all the cargo lights have a wire going to the hatch latch? Ive seen some threads referring to getting a latch to go with the light. The latch just connects the ground right? Cant you just leave that wire grounded all the time and turn on the light with the built in switch?

Yes. I don't have a latch switch, used the power wire & added ground wire attached to one of the body screws. Manualy turn light on & off. There is a special latch for auto on/off. It has wires that run to it. Uh, did that make ANY sense?

On my 93l I just used a door switch I found a spot where the hatch makes contact with the body when closed put my switch there on the body and ran my ground to it

You can still buy a new wired latch, although it's a little pricey. It's a best offer in Euros.

Thanks for the input. I am going to did around for a switch that will work until I find a latch. I like the auto on and off.

I made my own tilt switch and installed it in the hatch. It's just a mercury switch that I scavenged from an old Grand Marquis' trunk lid light. I wrapped thick copper wire around it so I could bolt it to the hatch and adjust the tilt angle, then soldered a lead to the blue wire. When the hatch is open, it gives ground to the light.

Found a cargo light in a Taurus wagon last week when out pickin. Same as the Festiva light. I wonder if the rear wiper motor is the same? Anyone know?

The akso wiper motors are the same, but the mount brackets that are spotwelded on are different. Festiva rear wiper motors are unique to Festivas, Kia Prides and Mazda 121DA.

Need tips on installing a cargo light I got from a 94 Escort wagon. (got one from a Mazda MPV also but it's slightly bigger).
Is the one from the Escort just supposed to snap into the right rear speaker cover without any modifications.
Is the on/off switch toward the front of the car or the back?

                        From Escort 90mm x 40mm.
                        From MPV 95mm x 40mm.

On the back from plastic tab to uncompressed metal tab is 80mm on both lights.

I was originally going to make this post to ask for help, but with some experimenting I finally figured it out.
The on off switch must face toward the front of the car and the Escort light will snap right in.

The MVP light will also snap right in if i just trim about 3mm from just one of the plastic tabs on the bottom.

You will also need to get the plug in connector when you pull the MPV light because the the Festiva light
wires have separate connectors on each wire wheres the MPV light has one connector with both wires in it.

This was so easy..don't know why I waited so long to do this.
Of course you will still need to have the special latch to ground the blue wire when the latch is opened or else install a mercury switch
which will connect the ground when the hatch is raised.

i'm hesitant to get a euro latch. there's no rod that goes to the hatch opener handle. maybe one can be added. i think these latches were for the cars with the remote release inside and those cars didn't have a squeeze handle on the hatch. not sure but looking at the wiring on the euro latch it looks like the circuit is made when the tab pivots to push the tang. looks like using the key to unlock the hatch also would make the circuit.

I got the dome light for my 91 Festiva out of an early model Kia. Exact same connector, just had to cut a bigger hole.

Did that Kia dome light have the map lights also?
And did you install a cargo light as well?
