Black shoe polish works, too. Then use boot wax to seal it, then car wax like you normally would.

As you can see in the thread 91blue put up I used the Bondo Restore Black. It worked for about a year , then faded out , so I painted them. Ifyou don't like them shiney, just use the Bumper coat & they look original. I hope they stay black for a long time with no re-paint.

I used Interlux Brightside high gloss black and rolled it on. No primer needed, just good scuff of the paint with 320 grit and a thorough cleaning with mineral spirits. Tack cloth it, and then roll on lightly, about three coats. Paint thinned with 10 percent mineral spirits and a high density foam roller.

I tried the restore to black stuff, didn't work. My bumper is flaking off bassically. So looks like I will just have to paint it when I get some time, or wait until my shop is set up when I plan to bring it back to it's former glory.

Here is a great thread from the VW forums. I think im going to try the heat gun trick, seems to be the way to get closest to the OEM look.

                  Thanks for that link!

I really think though that my bumper is just to far gone. Like I say it almost appears as if a clear coat is pealing off.

Wait, what if it was painted before, and what's coming off is the old paint?? I really need to take a picture tomorow...

If it's peeling, it's got paint on it. Use some plastic-safe paint stripper to clean it up, sand it down, put a skim coat and paint or just paint it.

Given the lack of rigidity of body structure anywhere on the car, I'm not personally going to do any intensive body work on my car. It's got little dents, dings, and waves all over it, and if you look at it funny, it'll just get two more. Too much work to see it buckle the first time someone leans against it or my son throws a cotton ball in it's general direction, for me. It looks fine how it is.
