I once painted a waterfront house disco-fever purple with teenybopper pink trim after a neighbor-from-hell put up a for-sale sign. The next day, he lowered his asking price by $100,000 and the place sold quickly.
On the next assessment cycle, the county assessor lowered the value of my property's "improvements" (the house) from $23,000 to $1,000.
A few years later, somebody showed me an updated marine navigation chart with a new landmark in just the right spot -- a little square symbol marked "purple house."
