  • easy way to remove ignition barrel "one-way" bolts?

have a question for you festivian's out there

i have the tilt steering from a 1989-1993 Festiva and need to know how to remove the ignition barrel as well as the indicator stalks as they need to come off so i can add this new piece of awesomeness.

The only real issue that i've come across is the ignition barrel is held in place by these annoying "one-way" bolts.. i'm just curious to know it anyone else has had to remove the bolts and could you please tell me how you went about it.

    Thanks.

small cold chisle or good flat tipped screw driver and a hammer does the trick for me. just keep walking it off till you can grab it. the stalk assem. comes off in one piece once the wheel is off.

Cut off wheel ! 90 degree angle ! Make it look like a straight screw head !
You can take it from there !
Or needle nose vise grips !
New build on the way .

There actually poorly designed to be removed with needle nose vise grips, once you crack them they loosen easily and you only have to loosen them a few turns then turn key to on position and the ignition will slide off! (info from shop manual)

thanks heaps for all the information here.

                Much appreciated.

Also did the earlier festies have telescopic steering as well?

i just took a dremel tool and cut a little slot in them and then took them out with a big flathead screw driver... then used the same ones to put it all together again... works just fine

The mounting flange is made to discourage replacing the break away bolts with normal bolts. Allen or torx drive work well as an alternative to breakaway bolts and stop future monkey business with locks.

During ford training seminars it has been said that this design was for fool proof torquing but that is easy to dispute. Others say breakaway bolts prevent theft of the car, but that is also easy to counter, security torx is removable and reusable.

There is no reason for breakaway bolts other than somebody influential invented them and stays in the loop..making bank while we chip away at the edge of these dang things to get them out.

That is why I never reinstalled my breakaway bolts. I wasn't about to go through that removal exercise again. I just installed some truss head replacements. Anyone want to buy two breakaway bolts? Real cheap? Almost free?

I've used a power inverter, dremel, and 20 minutes of my day. Unfortunately, it wasn't so easy without a battery at the junkyard. It was a pita to get the new ignition out of the junk car.
