  • I want to repaint my interior rear panels to either match the door cards or dash.....

...and I haven't seen a Krylon Fusion that matches. I also can't find the plastic primer anywhere locally.

I have a can of blue Fusion paint that I painted the interior (the side you can't see once it's installed) of one of the rear panels with and let it dry a few days. I scuffed half of it with a scotchbrite pad and top coated it all (including a portion I hadn't panted blue) with a can of green paint that was sitting on the table, not sure of the brand of it even.

It's been drying a few days, planning on banging on it some with some tools and maybe taking it to the carwash afterwards for a blast.

I'd like it to look stock to someone that doesn't know what color the interiors typically are, plus I'll be installing some different seats that have a darker fabric, so I'm leaning towards matching the dash. This will push me to make new door cards, which I've been wanting to do for a while.

Most automotive paint shops can mix paint for use on vinyl. My local Carquest and O'Reilly's can mix paint. Some places can even put it in a spray can.

I've seen special paints for vinyl, plastic and even cloth at the local Autozone. I believe it was VHT or Dupli-Color. I think I saw some at the Auto Paint & Supply store as well. I bet if you search the Internet you could order some.

SEM paints. real auto parts jobbers (not McChinaRockZone) usually carry the brand. also online. not cheap.

go to an auto paint store have them mix you up a can of your stock color code.
            or whatever color you like.

you can get it in single stage which is color and clear in one.
it would be simple and easy to apply.

or you can get it in base clear where they give you the base color by itself and then you buy polyurethane to clear over it.
base clear tends to have more mettallics in it if you have mettallic paint. and give your paint more depth when completed with all the layers.

as for painting plastic. just make sure to use adhesion promoter.
you put it on the plastic by itself to ensure that the paint going over it adheres to the substrate.
then you prime it with high build primer to help fill in the sanding scratches if any.
then you paint over it with your paint.

car manufacturers have plastic and metal body panels they need to paint
so to make sure they use the same paint so everything matches.
they use the adhesion promoter to help it adhere.

i used it on my soft plastic vortex generators on the roof of my car and its been in the rain and salt and snow in pittsburgh.
its also seen down to -3 degrees up to 100 degrees.
they can even flex without breaking or chipping paint. car paint is very resiliant and made to be flexible for car movements/ hot and cold expansion/contraction.

            adhesion promoter then primer.

then base coat of color till its solid and consistant in color
            1st coat

            2nd coat

            3rd coat

after base coats. mettallic paint looks funny without clear on it.

after 4-5 coats of clear with the final coat being a nice wet coat.

and last how does it match on the car???

the adhesion promoter pretty much helps almost any kind of paint adhere to plastic/vinyl/rubber surfaces.

i also needed adhesion promoter to make sure the tint i applied to my last set of taillights and lenses adhered well and lasted a long time.
stuff works well. and it dries super fast.

            whatever paint you get.
light sand the doors with scotchbrite.
clean with alcohol to remove grease/oil/dirt
            spray adhesion promoter.
            spray primer.
            spray color.
and if you want it shiny use polyurethane.

in the painting industry we put polyurethane over things to provide a strong resiliant topcoat.
it hardens and pretty much protects the paint.
so if the project permits the clear will help you keep things solid for a long time.

ive even painted cabinets with latex paint them cleared over them to made them easy to clean and protect the paint.
            they looked great.
