Questions about festy headliner

Well when I removed mine for building the shogun , it was only stretched vinyl glued to 3/16 steel wires that were wedged in the rooftop.

When I saw this , the headliner took a hike in the dump.

But now I see this (in the sunroof thread)


Wait , what? a proper headliner....

was that an option , a special year????

Iirc anything after 90 had the hard headliner.

Well mine is a 92 and it had crapola headliner (canadian)

I guess the canadian model was different in that aspect. I only see the soft liner on models with non power belts.

From what. I have read you can switch the headliners, you just need to grab and cut down the a piller trim so it looks right.

I just pulled the headliner from my 93 yesterday and it was like the one pictured, held in by (interior panels and molding strips obviously) 4 push pins in the rear, the screws for coat racks above back seat, two 10mm boots up front, two push pin clips, the sunvisors, and rear view mirror. The seat belt sliders also got in the way. It's got a semi hard backing, a little softer than the door panels, with vinyl glued to it. Kind of a pita to.get out in one piece, I ripped mine out because its ripped and has a couple holes..so it won't make it back into the car.

That headliner is out of a '92 L. It is kind like a light fiberglass on the unexposed side with a softer then layer on top...then the vinyl I guess glued to the other side. Zoom zoom mentioned all the spots that hold it up. It can very easily be cut as you can see from my photo. I just used a sharp pocket knife. And if you don't handle it carefully I could see how it would crack/break. I was a little worried trying to install it by myself.

Manual seat belts had the vinyl head liner cars with power seat belts got the fiber board

Now I gotta scavenge a US festy headliner , thats just great. And it ships very well too.

It cracks really easy but when you push it back up where it was it doesn't show on the side you see. My snapped cracked and popped like rice crispies but still looks as good as it did....which wasn't really that good to begin with

So has any one actually BTDT? Removed a late headliner (& trim) and installed it in place of the early vinyl headliner & bows?
Id have imagined there was structural differences in the roof ~

Canadian Festivas all have the soft headliner. The US models with the automatic belts had the hard version. Keep in mind that there is allowance for the auto belt track system with the hard headliner so there will be a gap when installed in a manual belt car.

i have removed the hard version but it's easier if you've removed the front and rear seats. that'll give you the room to manipulate it out the hatch without help. you don't want to bend it too much. the backing is like a soft fiberboard and will crack if bent too far and the crack might show up under vinyl on the finished. i think you can use it on a previously soft headlined car but without using the old support bows of course. the drawback as mentioned is the notches above the doors. since these hard headliners were put in the motorized belt cars here there will be an ugly gap and tabs showing from the hard liner. you need the motorized belts and the 1 piece A-B pillar molding to make it look good or use the 1 piece molding and just drill a hole in it to mount the manual belt strap anchor. but i'm not sure if the body stampings are the same to accept the revised hardware mounting points.

Get a helper. The headliner is very light. Two people will ensure it doesn't crack.

I have used the New style headliner along with manual seat belts. In every Festiva I have had I recover the headliner with material leaving it too long on the sides and rear. The I just pull it tight and sandwich it on the door frame with the edging. Of course there is a LOT more to the process but in a nutshell you get the pic. Looks factory and lets me have my manual belts. They have ALWAYS went unnoticed at every meet I have ever been to.
