  • Rubberized undercoating instead of carpet.

So I'm sure I'm not the only one who has covered this but here goes anyway
My carpet in my car is threadbare to say the least and literally turning to dust. This weekend I'm going to pull the seats and carpet and spray rubberized undrcoating over the whole floorboard. My vehicle is a daily to work driver and a farm vehicle so I need something tougher than the carpet. What do y'all guys think???

I'll post a material list and diy when I do it.

Probably should opt for some better stuff like rhino lining, I always have problems with the rubberized undercoating aerosol cans not wanting to fully dry/cure so if you scrape it hard enough it just wipes off and looks horrible because not all of it comes off. I suppose you could try it in an area and maybe get better results?! I like the idea tho it sounds like a winner! Just gotta keep the water from touching metal!!

I would opt for a DIY bedliner kit instead. That's what I used on an S10 pickup i had a while back.

Unless there is something else in the line of undercoating I'm not aware of, it seems the undercoating would tend to stay "gooey". Especially on the interior of a car in the southern part of the U.S.

      But, I've been wrong before.

You need a set of good, thick Festiva car mats.

You should ask Festiva_Fred what he used for his interior. It looked pretty good and was a combination of spray paint and spackle paint or something like that.

Love the idea of coating your floor with a solid durable rubber coating.
find the toughest one you can.

You could also put drains in the floor that open/close.
            Or rubber plugs.
and you could hose the car out when it gets dirty.

I would ideally use rhino or equivalent but I'm too cheap for that. I want it to look as decent as possible for as cheap as possible.
I'll also report back on shirt term durability/ looks as well as long term.

Also that's a great idea about the drainplugs. I'm going to add that in. Just like my h1 use to have

Don't go cheap on the under coating you really do get what you pay for when it comes to undercoat.
I used rustoem bed liner in my car but its dosent build.
Should have just used paint lol but it dose hold up well.
Although i did put carpet back in.
I did the bed liner in hopes of some sound deading and rust pretection.

You used to own an H1? Awesome! And also funny that you went from an H1 to a Festiva!

I have done rubber undercoating inside a vehicle before and i can say it doesn't work. It never firms up, so your heel will scrape it off. Your foot will also stick to it when it is hot outside. Unless you want to have sticky shoes, track undercoating everywhere, and have your festiva floor look a bit rough i wouldn't recommend undercoating. The bedliner idea is much better, and it actually works. Auto parts stores have the bedliner kits that aren't too expensive.

Can get a gallon of rustoleum bed liner for like $60.

I used to work for Tremco. They had distressed stock (free to employees). Skids of 5 gallon cans of high build construction urethane for sealing below grade walls, that had been dented by forklift drivers. Basically, anything you felt like wrapping in a rubber membrane. Stones and gravel would bounce off and hardly make a sound.

After doing some research at work I believe I'm going to use a half a gallon of high quality bedliner for the Hugh traffic areas and then flat black everything else. We will see what happens and hopefully the weTher will be nice. Ill post pics and do a write up

My ears ring from the fuel pump if i don't have the carpet installed. I drove two days with no padding at all and did not like.

It takes a LONG TIME for the fumes to go away from the spray can stuff. Greenhouse effect heats it up over and over and you will still breathe that junk in. I really do not suggest doing it.
