  • Trailer Hitch

I was asked about my trailer hitch via a PM so I figured i'd give the details in a post. I got a hitch from a Dodge Grand Caravan from the junkyard for $25. Uhaul part #36203. It took a little modification to get it to fit, but it works pretty good.

I drilled holes in the frame and welded a nut into the hole so that I could bolt the hitch to the frame. I also welded the hitch to the frame.

It fit between the tow hooks, sort of. It's on the outside of the left side and inside of the right side. I did have to trim some the edge of the hooks and beat it a little with a hammer. I bolted it to them and booger welded it also.

I had to cut the rear muffler hanger and take some material off the hitch where the tail pipe was interfering with the hoop.

I also had to cut some of the hitch to clear the muffler.

I was at the junkyard and wasn't really looking for a hitch. For some reason the hoop for the exhaust caught my eye while walking by it. There happened to be a Festiva at the yard also, so I was able to try out the fit before buying it.

Is there anything wrong with the ones on ebay for light towing?

The only thing wrong with the curt hitches on eBay is the price. I'm sure they are fine for light hauling. As long as your spare tire well is in good shape. I,e no rust

You mean like this Curt unit? Perfectly adequate. I'd reinforce the bumper first, esp. if rusty, and paint it w/Rustoleum Rust Fix, and then Rustoleum enamel paint. I would also paint the hitch with a clearcoat before installing. The stock paint will come off quickly.
