I have a few questions and observations regarding tach clusters, both orange and white faces. I have one of each and have used both and had both disassembled. I bought my 92 L new and it came with a standard speedo with the "front lighting" bar with 4 74 lights. The illustrations in the shop manual only shows 2 lights. I have a second speedo cluster from a 93 (L ?) JY car I bought and it has a 4 light also. The 2 tach clusters both had "2 light" bars. Is there a standard configuration?
Neither the 92 shop manual, EVTM, and wiring diagrams have any mention of tach clusters, nor is the tach signal even shown, but it's there. Was a tach cluster even an option on the 92's?
I have replaced all the 74's and 194's for illumination and warning with LED's. The orange face uses only 194's for all functions, but the white face uses 74's for blinkers, hi-beam, and warnings and one of the back-lighting, but 3 other back lights are 194. Is this standard or is there a standard among all white face? The one function I was not able to use a LED was for "brake", a 74. With the LED it was always lit and when the parking brake was applied, it got brighter. Anyone have any thoughts on why this happens. I tried it with 3 different LED's with the same result, so I left the bulb in that one. I haven't tried a 194 LED in the brake light of the orange face or the standard speedo, mainly because I am tired of swapping clusters.
The white face tach didn't have the "lights on" buzzer working when I got it, so I pulled the circuit board with the intention of trying to replace the buzzer. When I got it apart I noticed the buzzer was reversed in polarity even though the circuit board and the buzzer are clearly marked for polarity. The solder joints appeared to be original, but that is hard to tell. Desoldering, reversing, and resoldering fixed that, happily( my 2nd favorite feature after the trip odometer). So if anyone's buzzer doesn't work, that may be something to check.
Has anyone modded a standard speedo to have a lights on buzzer?
