  • doing my own tint

I have a roll of tint that was lying in the back of the car when we got it. There are no instructions with it, and i don't know what shade it is... all i know is its fairly dark, but not the darkest i've seen. It has some wrinkles and folds in it, but i don't think they'll show once it’s on the window. It *looks* to me as if their mostly noticeable in the backing, and not in the film itself... what do you think is the film possibly damaged?
I'm going to just be doing the back three windows. I don't want to mess with removing the rear window. Will i just need to put like 6" strips horizontally working from the bottom to the top, or is it better to do it as one piece for the rear? I read somewhere about using a heat gun to 'shrink' the tint to the window, sounds possibly problematic to me.
As far as the side windows go they look fairly easy to remove to me, just 3 bolts. With someone’s help they should come out in a few minutes, but how is the gasket held on? should i just leave it on the window when i apply the tint and cut the tint as closely as possible to edge or remove it and put the tint over the whole surface of the window and re-apply the gasket afterwards?

I think thats about it so far as questions go. i read http://s-series.org/Sections-article55-p1.html and http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/cda/ar...-PRINT,00.html about DIY tinting, basically baby shampoo, distilled water, and a squeegee are all that is needed.

Thanks a ton! i plan on doing this next week if things work out... i'll post pics afterwards [/url]

IF you get it on there it WILL look like crap.

It's also illegal in your state.

If you insist, buy new tint. That stuff is damaged. Buy the $5 "kit" that has a crappy squeege, carbon knife that will scratch your windows (we tinters use stainless steel), and stuff.

The back will need to be done in pieces if you don't know how to shrink a window.

The most important thing is clean the windows. Scrap them with a razor blade when wet, squeege them, spray and squeege again. When you're ready to put the tint on clean them one more time. Never use a paper towel. Otherwise every spec of dirt will show up in the tint as a white little bubble.

Also, the tint you buy at walmart or autozone has about a 1 to 2 year life on it before it turns purple.

You're better off paying $120 to a professional that will use a film that will never delaminate, demetalize, bubble, and won't fade for about 7 years.

        Good luck.

          Hey,

*darkdan wrote* Scrap them with a razor blade when wet, squeege them, spray and squeege again.
Never Scrap the back window you will remove the defroster lines, use a nylon scrubby.

          Thanks

dan- thanx for some of the info... i will deff not be paying someone to do it, though i am now re-considering using the tint i have.

where do you get that its illegal in my state? I had, till this point, not checked the local laws... apparently you can put 70% tint on any of the windows but the rear must have a sticker or something... this doesn't make sense to me, because 70 is like nothing and i see cars all the time with like 20, sometimes what i think is darker, and even on the front windows...

is where i got that info from.

i have read a bunch on how to install the tint, i know about not scraping the defrosters and such...
