Some ford guys could tell for sure but I order a lot of ford parts and the "new" number that still fits the same is usually one letter higher or a second letter added. I have always assumed that I would want the part with the higher letter or biggest suffix such as A1A over just an A. Glad you brought that up learning by observation and assumption and hearing from the blue oval american boys could be two completely different things!Reflex paint by Langeman...Lifted...Tow Rig

not a ford guy. not an expert. but i got the dope. F1CZ switches mostly apply to escort 1991-93. F1KY mostly all tracer 91-93.
suffixes:
A - fixed interval wiper w/o CC
B - variable wiper w/o CC
C - w/o rr wiper-wash w/CC
D - variable wiper w/CC
E - w rr wiper-wash w/o CC
F- w rr wiper-wash w/CC
can't say i never heard of a suffix denoting an improved part. maybe but mostly they point to differences in color, configuration (as in the combo switch), sometimes left vs right, upper vs lower, application for a 2 or4 door or wagon, or to separate similar items such as if there are 3 sections of high pressure power steering hoses they might all have the same group # but end with A-B-or C.
the first 2 digits in a part# denote decade and year. E1= 1981, E3= 1983, F2= 1992. that's usually the first year that part was installed. the same part can be used for as many model years as needed if it isn't changed in any significant way. that is why the majority of festiva parts will start with E8BZ. other than the switch to EFI engines, very little else changed throughout its run although almost each year and trim level has unique numbers for that years seat and door upholstery. probably the rarest and fewest part #s start with F3BZ (that's me!) since by then the car was pretty well sorted out, de-contented (thats me too!) and on its last year.
the next 2 letters in a part # usually denote the model it applies to.
BZ - festiva & aspire
CZ - escort
KY - tracer
JY - capri
2Z - probe
there can be some cross pollination where a part is designed to fit multiple model lines but because the festiva was kia built, almost all BZ #s will be for a festiva or aspire exclusively.Last edited by F3BZ; 06-15-2015, 05:02 PM.

I couldn't think of the word earlier where I most often run into a part number with a last letter change. The tell me "Oh, that part number is no longer used it has been superseded" to a number with the last letter changed from A to B or maybe AB, A1A the rest of the number staying the same.Reflex paint by Langeman...Lifted...Tow Rig

Ford uses suffixes for different reasons. Sometimes for not being backward compatible, to address a safety concern, to designate color, to designate options or stlyes, to specift with or without, etc.
A minor engineering improvement (e.g. to improve fit and function, a process change or a cost reduction) could be incorporated in a running change using the same suffix.
Only the base part number remains the same in order to protect the innocent (and designate what area of the car the part is from).Last edited by bravekozak; 06-15-2015, 06:33 PM.

Stupid question: is the BF Tracer wiper switch a direct fit for the Festiva? Do I need any other wiring or relays? I thought there was something wired different from the Festiva.Driving for me is neither a right nor a privilege. Driving is my passion, as it was for the people who invented the automobile, the people who paved the first roads and the people who continue to improve the automobile. Please respect this passion.

I have run across slightly different pin positions for the headlights. If you had a $3 terminal extractor, The problem could be resolved by switching wires around in the mating connector in less than ten minutes (five ninutes with practice). The Tracer combination switch that I bought new from the bay was a direct fit.Last edited by bravekozak; 06-15-2015, 08:19 PM.
