  • not planned crash test

i Mazda MVP van pulled in front of me and i hit it in the side while it was pulling into a gas station and i hit it going about 25-30 mph and Glad to say the 93 festiva held up pretty well. i only need a front bumper, passengers front fender and hood in which i still can close like before the accident. the radiator is still good with the radiator support suffering no damage. the front head lights and turn signals did not suffer any damage but the front grill has a small crack.
this was a real surprise that it was drivable after the accident and the van was towed.

Judging by the amount of damage you say you received I bet you weren't going any faster that 7.5mph at the time of impact. I appreciate you spicing up the story though.

hahaha yeah really. that damn grille is so fragile it breaks if you think about it with anrgy thoughts.

you can lean against the front fender and crush it in too.

The metal on the bars (holds the radiator and some other stuff on) in the front of the engine compartment are so thin that if they're bent it's a dead giveaway of a frontal collision...

          spicing up stories

          no spicing up the story.
i am sorry that others spice up stories but i do not spice up stories.
i even have the estimate and the payment from the insurance company for proof. there was even a police report done because the other car was towed.

Back in the early eighties I wasn't paying attention in a parking lot and hit a woman in the side of her Olds Omega (RWD Nova clone) with the front of my '76 Chevette. Dented her side door area and cracked one of my headlight surrounds. I estimate I was doing no more than 10 mph, tops. (Probably more like 5 mph.) Chevettes are 2150 lb. cars. We drove to the local PD station and filed the report. No major damage.

IMO, a Festiva frontal collision at anything over 10 or 15 mph should result in some pretty noticeable, if not major, damage.

I suppose if you strapped several layers of old tires to your front bumper that would provide enough protection to lower damage in a 25 mph crash.

Keep in mind when you actually crash, you are not the world's best witness, due to adrenaline effects, etc. I'm NOT saying you are lying, but I doubt you were actually concentrating on the speedo at impact!

Did you brake just before impact? I'd say you were doing 25 to 30 mph just before you braked and that's why you think the impact was higher. If the cops measured your skidmarks the estimated speed they wrote on the report would have been what you were doing before you hit the brake pedal.

There's also the angle to consider. Your car may actually have hit on a tangent and "bounced" off to some extent. So your speed may indeed have been a little higher than expected, and you happened to hit her van in a spot which disabled it while not damaging yours too much.

              probably slammed on the breaks

You probably think you were doing 25-30 because thats what your mind was seeing the last time you looked down at the dash, but your reaction to the other vehicle probably caused your brain to slam on the breaks, which at 25mph willl get you to about 10 in no time. Plus if you only needed a passenger side fender, that tells me you didnt directly T-BONE her car, but Hit it more on the right side of yours.
