Factory painted bumpers -vs- black

So what I'm understanding from searching old threads is that 90-93 GL's either came standard with painted bumpers covers from the factory or was an option.

But the question I'm wondering, Were the painted bumpers simply the same black plastic/rubbery bumpers that most Festivas received but painted over?
Or were the oem painted bumpers made of a different plastic? Maybe a different part #?

Saturn used 2 different materials. Black for sohc cars and a different type plastic for for painted dohc models.

Just wondering what Ford did?

Cut a painted bumper open and check. I am betting that it is the same plastic painted over. They used black TPO (thermo plastic olefin) bumpers for gas resistance, as opposed to yellow (stiffer) RIM (reaction injection molded) plastic.

I used to work at Rimply. They made and painted bumpers.

Do note that there is texture on the non painted bumpers, where the painted units are smooth.

the OEM replacement covers for all 90-93s were supplied as "black - paint to match". i can see a little of the texture showing on my GL if looking close enough.
