  • Sound proofing

I was driving in my festy with my friend lately and he suggested soundproofing the doors and maybe cutting down on the noise you hear while driving. So me and him are going out tomorrow to get some foam and we're going to see what happpens!

I would like to know how this turns out for you. I layered towels in my spare tire wheel well and put blankets over the carpet. Helped a little but it's still LAF.

Go on eBay and search "sound deadener".
Be sure to buy butyl. Asphalt based deadeners stink when hot.

100 square feet will do most of the interior except the roof.

Make sure you do the roof too. What a difference.

With its context I'm pretty sure he meant loud af (look up af it's a common internet term)

I'm considering using acoustic foam for floor, hood lining, door trims etc.

I used lizzard skin sound deadener in my wife's aspire I liked it because you can spray inside the doors and get everything you can't get with a mat type sound deadener it worked well and cleans up with soapy water check out lizzard skin .Com for info good luck on the sound proofing

Loud, very loud. Loud as @$&*. When I roll in my Festiva I wear ear plugs for longer trips.

Have you thought of replacing your exhaust? Lol.

                            Hi guys,

To anyone who would like to do sound deadening and get the most for their money.... In the automotive environment you really want to add mass. Automotive panels are thin, allowing noise to pass through or excite the panel so that is becomes a big resonator. Adding foams of any kind will do little to quiet these types of noises. Foam will still allow the panel to resonate, maybe less but it will still vibrate.

These little Festivas were made with really thin sheet metal. The Butyl products on the market are my personal favorite for any sound deadening. The sprays do work, to a point, but for the amount of $$$ you will spend on a good spray product you could just by brand name butyl sound deadening sheets, and get a better end result.....

Acoustic foams are intended to stop reflections, they work to help keep the sound generated INSIDE a closed area from being reflected back to that area...... not really the problem we have in the automotive environment...... Yes they will work sort of because you are adding some mass that was originally not there, but the better $$ spent would be to make the offending panel as heavy as you can.

There are many no -name butyl sound deadeners available so if you decide to go that rout shop around. The better products will have good adhesion and be thicker than their competitors, after all its about adding mass.......

                            Just my 2cents.

                              LOL

                              Loud as $&$^!

Is it wind noise that is so loud or exhaust noise?

And yes, in the miata world, we use thick adhesive backed rubber to quiet rattling panels, foam to fill voids, and in general avoid loud exhausts. For me, even just switching tires can make a huge difference.

But personally, I'm all about NVH
