  • im tired of autometer gauges... whats the modern equivilent???

looking at what they charge for a set of gauges from auto meter, its ridiculous... to set up my diesel truck with the main 3 is like 500 bucks for basic ones, if I want peak hold and warning its like 1000 bucks...... and I would like to have a few more than the main 3.... but I don't want to have it a cluster #@(& of gauges like ive had in the past lol... ive been doing a bit of research in to ZADA tech digital gauges, and they are cool... I like the look, they are compact, look easy enough to read, and have peak hold and warning... but they are still 500 bucks and then you add the sensors on top... with how popular the arduino chip has become im sure its possible to make a gauge cluster like what I want for very cheap... anybody know of a place that makes this sort of stuff or does anyone on here know a lot about arduino chips?

    zada tech lcd gauges...

Not sure if you could do something like the Subaru Legacy/Outback guys do...Nexus 7 running torque or a Subaru-specific app called BtSsm.

If your vehicle is OBDII then, at least as far as price is concerned, it's hard to beat an old smart phone/tablet and Torque.

I will look into this a bit more for you but I can't say that I will do it right away. I have owned a Subaru STi so I am in the know and on the forums for those, also I have been to SEMA show with the invite by Prosport gauges and had a few of their gauges in my car. Give me a little time and I will do my best to get you some information. Like said above, more than likely its easier if the car is OBD II and our cars are not, only way I see to make it easier in the manner spoken above is the Mitsubishi EVO ECU upgrade which would likely make it OBD II (just off the top of my head).

I've been using a couple of Prosport gauges in my Cressida with no problem, and they look pretty modern for a non-digital gauge. Reasonably priced too.

I tried depo racing gauges in my sidekick and f250 and they where ok but then started acting up and flipping through the 7 colors on their own and then would start blinking the warning light for no reason and finally the one in my f250 just went full retard and glitched out so bad that I just unplugged it lol.... I don't want to go with more china gauges... and im beginning to hate the look of gauges, I kind of like the lcd look... stealthy and compact. the gauges I had in my sidekick covered the whole center of my dash (about 3.25 inches tall with cups and like 16 inches wide lol...) and I only had 5gauges... the 4.3 inch lcd has 6 gauges displayed at once...

the 2001 f350 I want to buy will have obd2 but it wont give me a EGT sensor and I don't think it will give me trans temp? but I like the thought of the app based gauges... I have an old Samsung phone I could mould in to the dash.

Trans temp should be part of the PID list...

You might try asking on diesel truck forums. There will probably be a greater number of people there who have bought higher priced gauges. And maybe a certain brand/model/style fits real nice on your truck.
The majority of us go with whats cheap on festivas. I like gauges and would buy every one if i could but i always have gotten cheap ones. The $20 chinese water temp gauge i just installed reads 10f low at 180f and 15f low at 230f...
Cheap mechanical gauge was accurite but a pain to fit and only lasted 1 year.
Nice thing about something digital is you just need one screen, then all the sensors. By the time you get
                  Oil press
                  Oil temp
                  Coolant temp
                  Charged air temp
                  Exhaust temp
                  Trans temp
                  Boost
Your dash is full and you spent a lot of money...

I second the trans temp being important if you tow. My dad once delivered to some guy who lived basically on the top of some mountain with this crazily steep switchback dirt road going to it. Had an older f-350 and 28,600pounds. Transmission overheated and some seal or gasket melted inside. Tow bill and repair bill to the trans for a 50cent seal was $3200 iirc. He got a gauge and a better cooler right after but that was like how he didnt install an exhaust brake until he destroyed $1500 worth of brand new brake stuff when he got detoured through a road in the rockies he wasnt planning to take.
Nothing like replacing all the pads rotors, calipers, drums and shoes on your truck and trailer and destroying it all within 24hrs to make you get an exhaust brake.

I wouldn't mind eventually finding a way to run an OBDII BP ECU. Buuuuut that may be more trouble than it's worth.

Ryanprins13, my dad did something similar in his Ford turbo diesel during an elk hunting trip. He had a 4wheel in the bed of the truck and pulling a loaded down camper and the transmission decided to purge itself before they made it to camp. The tow and repair was something ridiculous as far a $ and my dad ended up trading in the truck a few months later because he was so pissed (although it was for another Ford haha).

There are a lot of the Subaru guys who are doing custom interior Ipad's and this linked to there OBDII port or something similar, its pretty cool actually and I'm sure that someone with some decent fab skills could modify the lower cubby of the dash that's below the stereo to fit one. Now the OBDII part is a different story as we are OBDI and I have very little experience with that. Your turbo diesel may be compatible with this system and you can also use your phone if you don't have an Ipad.
