The carpet steamer idea is a good one, but I have one as well.
A few years ago I came across a car that had been sitting in mud for 10 years. The transmission and engine were inside, on the floor, on the very light grey carpet.
I used a product called Mr. Green, a scrub brush and a garden hose to get it clean. It took an hour of hard work, but 10 years of soaked in tranny and engine filth came right out.
