Engine Bay Led Lighting

Today I installed a strip of white led lights inside Nellie's hood.
Got the switch from the junk yard. (I think it was from a 99 Nissan Maxima.)
You have to be careful when you pull one and make sure the contact is complete when the plunger is up. Some work the opposite way.

I ran the wires down inside the hood and followed the Washer hose out to the left side.
I attached the switch to the side. There was an existing threaded hole (6mm) there where it fit perfectly.
Attached the ground wire to that same bolt. For the positive, I soldered a 5 amp fuse inline
to the positive wire put the stripped end in the front main fuse leg and pushed the long leg fuse down over it.
Covered up the wires under the switch with some yellow vinyl tape.

Work Great.

I drove Nellie about 30 miles today and heated up the engine bay pretty good. The light strip stayed attached to the under side of the hood and the lights still work fine.
So I don't think the engine heat will be a problem for the lights.

You can find the led lights at reasonable prices all over and a compatible switch is pretty easy to find in the junk yard too. Really not a lot to it and having the light
there when you need it is worth it for me. Total cost about $8 for everything.

I'm going to look for two more switches like that and put those lights on Trixie and Rosie too.

No link..just search ebay for led strips. You will find all kinds. I bought the ones I have a few year ago when I put them under my kitchen cabinets.
They have water proof ones which cost a little more and non water proof which I used under the hood. (I used some waterproof ones on my bike...red ones on the back)
The ones I used on the hood are white but you can buy lots of colors. They have peel off adhesive on the back.
You will need at least one of the connectors with leads... I think they come in multi packs. Instruction come with the roll of stirps.

I'm still trying to remember the exact car I pulled the switch from. I pulled three from different cars but returned the two I didn't use.
The switch cost me $4.50 at LKQ. The switches are called hood ajar switches. Only writing I could find on the one I used is Niles Japan and the number 4110.
It has a small simple bracket with only one hole to attach the switch. A plastic slot on the switch slides down over the top of the bracket.

They will not work unless you connect the polarity correctly. Attach the connector lead so the red wire is connected to a + marked copper spot and make sure the red wire goes to power and the black wire goes to ground. I fused the power wire. The lead wires are very small. They can be tiny because the amps used by the leds is very small.

Perfect! Thanks for the info. I have some of these light strips with adhesive backing. I suppose they will stick pretty good if mounted to a nice clean surface. Thanks for sharing this!
